GCCS has a unique, sustainable structure for implementing expeditions which tell the story of Rochester’s local history and current issues in the community. Our expeditions integrate academic standards using teacher written ELA modules/expeditions that lead to authentic final products which are shared on Exhibition Nights.
Teacher written ELA modules weave NYS CCSS and long and short term learning targets into the story of each expedition. These expeditions engage students with rigorous content that leads to deeper learning. Students at GCCS engage in three learning expeditions each year. These GCCS structures empower students to become actively engaged in our community.
Critical thinking is an integral part of the expeditions at GCCS. Students problem solve, analyze, create and articulately communicate their learning to authentic audiences. Final products capture student’s creativity and learning through performances, student work, as well as audience participation.
Students show an intimate understanding of their community's past, present, and future through their final products and Exhibition Night presentations of learning.
Looking closer at student performance towards targets and standards helps inform instruction around argumentative, informational, and narrative writing.
Reflecting on Rochester provides students an opportunity to prove their knowledge of our city through research and expedition experiences.
