Time and again, Genesee Community Charter School produces some of the strongest assessment outcomes of public schools in Monroe County and within the charter school sector in New York State. GCCS was named a New York State Reward School in 2015 for its consistent high performance.
Although the NYSED website cautions “it is important to again note that due to the State’s new two-session test design and performance standards, the 2018 Grades 3-8 ELA and Math results cannot be compared with prior-year results,” GCCS students outperformed their peers in the RCSD, Monroe County and NY State on the NYS ELA and Math tests throughout the last three years, according to the state data (this can also be found in the GCCS Credentialing Data profile).

Source: Empire Charter Consultants, nysed.govThis data shows a significant impact on student learning from our academic integration of ELA within our expeditions. Our teacher written expeditions and ELA modules provide students with learning opportunities that are engaging and authentic. Students engage in deeper learning with a focus on a specific topic such as the Erie Canal or early settlers in Rochester. Guiding questions lead the learning as students build their background knowledge through meaningful field studies, research, and reading complex texts. While students work towards the final product they apply, evaluate, and synthesize their learning from the knowledge-rich expedition with an intrinsic motivation to create high quality work.
The interwoven nature of literacy instruction with learning expeditions means GCCS students are not only continuing to demonstrate a thorough understanding of their community’s rich history through critical thinking and articulate communication, but have shown strong academic gains as captured in iReady diagnostic data. These data show an overall average growth of 35 points in math and 24 points in reading from fall 2018 to spring 2019 in moving all students towards Tier 1 instruction.

As part of our mission, GCCS nurtures children’s natural abilities enabling them to reach exemplary standards. While our standardized assessment and diagnostic tool data show an upward trend for all students, we also rely on classroom summative assessments, end of expedition assessments and reflections, and teachers' professional judgement to indicate student achievement and progress. This graph shows the percentage of students who have made a year's growth in an academic year based on classroom data walls. Data walls are maintained by classroom teachers and are evaluated each trimester with school leadership to ensure students are making adequate progress or are receiving the interventions necessary to make progress.
