Task 1.2a - Theme Mind Map.
For my Medieval mindmap, I found myself very interested in the different forms of weaponry used in medieval times, and how different forms of the same weapon could vary, such as how axes can be used both close-range and as a thrown weapon, as well as how they can come with one or two heads. This is something I feel like I could definitely explore further into this unit so that I keep my assets varied and unique. Another thing I was interested in was the extensive list of jobs and roles that people performed in everyday medieval life, ranging from farmers to kings. Extending on this idea, another thing I can research are different tools and equipment the people used to aid in their tasks, such as wheelbarrows and anvils. Researching these will help me to add more detail to my work, creating more complex and accurate art.
Task 1.2b/c - Theme Mood Boards
Weapons Moodboard
One of the main elements I know I want to include and explore in my project this year is medieval weaponry as I think the variety and designs of the different tools will allow for lots of different options for me to experiment with and find what works best and what I like. In my moodboard, I tried to include lots of different types of weaponry as well as multiple variations of the same weapon to try and demonstrate the range of offensive items as well as to help me identify how these weapons can vary in multiple ways to serve multiple purposes.
One of the ideas I included on my moodboard that I think would be most interesting to explore are the shields as although their primary service is defense, they can still be used to ward off enemies, with some shields even being adapted to provide extra damage with additions, like spikes.
Tools Moodboard
When finding tools used in medieval times, I tried to find occupations and roles of the time and then find the tools from those. This helped me get a better understanding of how villages and towns functioned at the time and how different tools were used to aid in the jobs and lives of the people of the time.
I noticed that a large portion of the tools and jobs in medieval times related to farming and gardening, which helps to reflect the rural and agricultural lifestyle at the time. I also tried to include some items that might not have been necessarily used for work, but rather recreation or convenience, such as instruments and containers. This has helped to give me a wide variety of props that I could reference to add more detail and life into any scenes I create during this project.
Structure Moodboard
This is a moodboard I created on buildings and structures created in medieval times. I wanted to include multiple different structures that would provide different services, such as churches, housing and castles as this helped me to see the various methods used to construct buildings in medieval times as well as the difference in quality relating to the wealth of the people the building was constructed by or for.
One thing I am interested in that I found from this moodboard were exaggerated features in structures, such as grand archways and large pointed roofs. I think I can definitely use this in my work for this project to create accurate and interestingly designed buildings and structures.
Interior Moodboard
As well as creating a moodboard for the exterior of buildings, I also wanted to create a moodboard for the interior of buildings, as this would help me to better see the variety in medieval furniture and interior architecture. This has helped me to find common features in medieval houses and structures, such as wooden support beams and, in more wealthy buildings, arched ceilings and decorated or gilded walls.
Something I found from these examples that I really like are the dim lighting used in taverns and similar buildings either due to them being underground or having no windows. This allows for very noticeable lighting that creates a really unique mood and in my opinion makes the scene a lot more visually interesting.
