The Chinese Literature and Language course is designed to provide students with the autonomy to develop a deep understanding of the nature of language and language learning skills. This course will provide students with a supportive learning environment where they can develop the ability to use Chinese effectively for the purpose of practical and authentic communication. Students will have the opportunity to explore and discuss written texts dealing with Chinese literature and various aspects of Chinese culture and society, as well as global issues. The study of Chinese Literature and Language will cultivate the skills of analysis and evaluation needed to be critical consumers, and the communicative competencies required to be creative producers of texts. This course will allow students to critically examine and reflect upon their own roots and identities.

The Chinese Language and Literature course is designed to reactivate and deepen prior learning and will cater to different learners. In each unit, students will be engaged in class discussions and presentations to help develop oral competency in spoken Chinese and to express increasingly sophisticated ideas and opinions in a culturally and linguistically authentic manner. Students will also have the opportunity to explore and discuss different types of texts relating to Chinese literature and various aspects of Chinese culture and society, as well as global issues.
Unit 1: Culture and Identity
In this unit, students explore the relationship between language and culture. They develop their understanding and appreciation of Chinese prose and Chinese philosophy through cultural and aesthetic traditions.
Unit 2: Social Contexts and Individuals
In this unit, students explore the relationship between individuals and society, gaining an understanding of how individuals' values, growth, and lives are influenced by social contexts, as represented in a range of short stories.
Unit 3: Representation and Transformation
In this unit, students explore the literary techniques of drama, and adapt a short story into a drama script.
Unit 1: Singing from the hearts: Poem, Lyric, rhythmical language
In this unit, students demonstrate their appreciation of Chinese poems and modern Chinese song lyrics, and develop their understanding of how rhythmical language enhances communication between authors and audiences.
Unit 2: Multimodal Presentation: Film, and Visual Text
In this unit, students develop their understanding of how producers select forms of multimodal communication to engage the audience and develop meaning while studying the techniques used in movies, posters and photographs.
Unit 3: Intertextuality of Global Issues: Novel and Non-Literary Texts
In this unit, students develop their ability to introduce global issues in a novel and demonstrate their understanding of how global issues are presented in different text types by comparing and contrasting extracts from the novel and non-literary texts.
Unit 4: Amazing Imagination: Transformation in fiction
In this unit, students show their knowledge and understanding of imaginative plots in fiction texts by analyzing a series of extracts from fictional works.

Literary and textual analysis
There are five assessment objectives for the Chinese Language and Literature course:
knowledge and understanding,
analysis, interpretation and evaluation,
organization and presentation,
use of language and
creative production.
Assessments vary in their form and purpose, ranging from individual creative writing to literary analysis and argumentative writing. There are interdisciplinary projects involving oral presentations and debates, as well as research and critical thinking-based projects.
