Competition climbing is an optional pursuit in the Phoenix Climbing programme, but it is also prized as a mark of achievement among students. Particularly, the U-19A Team wears their colours with pride given the extraordinary amount of dedication and hard work required to earn and maintain a place on that roster.
Our competitive climbing team are structured as follows:
U-19A Team (official UWCSEA Phoenix Climbing Team & Varsity Squad)
Lead Coach: Deddy
U-19B Team (Phoenix Climbing Team, Junior Squad)
Lead Coach: Akid
U-19C Team (Phoenix Training Squad)
Lead Coach: Michael
Membership into the Climbing Teams is open to every student with some climbing experience. As long as you meet the pre-requisites (see sections below) and achieve the necessary performance levels during the annual Phoenix Climbing Combined Selection Trials, you may qualify for a suitable Phoenix Climbing Squad.
Membership in the Phoenix Climbing Teams is also a mark of achievement for all participating students, earned through hard work and dedication, and worn with pride.

Interested learners who have accumulated the necessary experience and wish to join the Phoenix Climbing Teams must also participate in an official Phoenix Climbing Trial event for their appropriate age-group:
Pre-Season Trial (week 1, August, Season 1),
All students who wish to join (or continue their membership in) any of the Phoenix Climbing Teams must participate in and register for the Season 1 Trial event through the CIMS portal. For a Team climber to stay in the Phoenix Climbing Teams for a whole academic year, this would mean that they must take part in both the Trial events mentioned above.
In general, Trial participants will face a range of climbing challenges during each event - from roped climbing to bouldering, across easy and hard levels. Every climber will be observed and have their scores recorded. Team allocations will be recommended after the Trials based on each climber's qualifying and performative markers.
NOTE: Due to the off-site venue as well as the format of the Trial event, we regret that walk-in participants cannot be accepted. Only pre-registered participants will be accepted for the event.
Phoenix Climbing Team members are expected to fulfil the following attendance levels:
Team members will also be supported and expected to take part in the below key events during each academic year. Support levels may be adjusted for fairness and to reflect the commitment levels reflected by each member's overall performance.
All Climbing Team members are expected to dedicate themselves fully to their respective team training programmes and to uphold the values of the UWCSEA Phoenix Spirit. Each team’s training programme and progression pathway is designed in accordance with the UWCSEA Dover Sports Pathway, and intended for progressive delivery across an entire school year (up to 4 Seasons).
To help all Teams and their members uphold a high standard of discipline and integrity, Team Coaches will also provide the following feedback and support channels:
Seasonal Review
Mid-Year Review & Feedback
End-of-Year Survey
Phoenix Climbing Team members will be participating in a Seasonal training programme with the following progression pathway in mind:
While a linear progression path may not be required or necessary for all Climbing Team members, following this pathway helps to ensure that the student’s development through our sport is well supported, suitably-paced and fosters healthy values that keep our climbers active for life.
