For climbers who come with some experience, or have developed a taste for the vertical, we have an additional progression pathway to support your learning journey - one that leads naturally into the world of competition climbing. This step brings with it a higher level of intensity, more competition-focused challenges and naturally a greater exposure to training approaches like systematic drills.
If you think you might need a little more time to attain any of the qualifiers mentioned below, this might mean that you are not yet ready to the next step. We highly recommend that you consider staying on with one of our suitable Development classes while you practice.
If you think that you might not enjoy competition climbing and focused practice or simply prefer a more relaxed learning environment, our Development classes would fit your preferences perfectly. Don't be fooled by how enjoyable they can be - these classes still provide plenty of challenge and options for progression.
The Junior School (Intermediate) classes on Bouldering provide an accessible platform for experienced learners who are interested in bouldering and feel ready for more focused pursuits. Based on our training programme, we recommend that Development leaners only consider taking this step after attaining the following:
Competent, safe and confident rope work
Including, but not limited to:
* Tying an ideal figure-of-eight climbing knot,
* Ideal belaying method, and
* A strong ability to work well in a belay team.
Basic climbing fitness
Be able to complete at least one coloured challenge route on each of the overhanging walls in one try, without falling off and without belay assistance.
Demonstrate good character
Obtain a coach's recommendation by upholding and demonstrating the Phoenix Spirit consistently. Given the impending structured training, being coachable will be an essential trait.
Recommended minimum grade age
Learners are recommended to be approximately Grade 4 and older before joining this learning pathway. Grade 5 would be ideal.
At the end of each training term, learners will also receive an opportunity to evaluate their learning and check their progress through practical sporting applications like mini-competitions. Together with coaching support, learners would receive useful feedback about their current level and progression options. This may include staying in their current class, or moving from the Intermediate class to other classes better suited to meet their capabilities and needs.
The Junior School (Intermediate) classes on Roped Climbing provide a focused platform for experienced learners who are mainly interested in scaling heights and feel ready for a more in-depth pursuit of the discipline they are already familiar with. Because most learners in the Phoenix Climbing programmes already start with a good deal of exposure to roped climbing, this class aims to build up on what they already know, empowering them to overcome their personal limits and paving the way for greater vertical confidence.
Based on our learning objectives, we recommend that Development leaners only consider taking this step after attaining the following:

This Team aims to prepare suitable learners for joining the Phoenix Climbing Competition Teams. Given its specialised nature, only suitable students from the Advanced (or equivalent) classes will be invited to take part in a Selection Trial to qualify for this Team.
The Selection Trial will emulate the processes that the Phoenix Climbing Teams go through, enabling everyone to demonstrate their capabilities equally and clearly, for coaches to make accurate assessments.
Pre-Competition Team Selection Trials will typically be held in Seasons 2 and 4 in order to support timetable arrangements for each new academic year. Subsequently, training sessions will be held on-campus across both roped climbing and bouldering facilities. Suitable learners will also be recommended opportunities to join external competitions and events in order to support their progression and deepen their experiences.
