Astrid and Harvey's Story
Astrid and Harvey's Story
We both were sixteen when we first enrolled as preparatory students, myself from Fanwood in New York and Astrid from CSD-Berkeley in California.
We knew of each other through my older sister (Roz) and her older brother (Franklyn) who were classmates. We were in a small class and our paths zigzagged often. Same friends, same parties, et cetera. We agreed later on that our hearts had fluttered for each other from Day One.
However, fortunately, we had the same priorities: do well in class and get a degree first (although actually playing basketball was my top priority). An aside: we both were selected as Male and Female Prep of the Year by the faculty. It helped that we had to return to our dormitories by 7 pm on weeknights and had study hall.
One story: we were in one prep class together, math. We compared our test scores and I managed to stay ahead of her. Even when she got a 100, I got bonus points. I was lucky we were not in the same class for English!
We became serious in our relationship in our junior year. We got married in 1966 after our graduation.
Fast forward: We just celebrated our 55th anniversary. A lot of growing up together at Gallaudet and beyond.
