Disability Rights Texas is the protection and advocacy agency for Texans with disabilities. People with disabilities have a right to be included in all aspects of their communities. Our mission is to help people with disabilities understand and exercise their rights under the law, ensuring their full and equal participation in society.
Various bar associations, non-profit organizations, and other private advocacy organizations host legal clinics that are open to the public. Legal clinics usually do not require an appointment and allow you to speak with an attorney who could help answer your legal questions or offer legal advice on how you might be able to resolve a legal issue.
Most clinics are free, but some may have a small fee to attend. Nearly all legal clinics have income qualifications, and some clinics only cover certain legal topics (e.g., wills, family law) or are only open to certain populations (veterans, the homeless, etc.). There may also be language interpreters present. Please read the descriptions for more information and contact the organization hosting the clinic for more details.
As students move into high school, one of the topics that school districts will discuss with parents is guardianship or alternatives to guardianship, like supported decision making. This discussion typically takes place in an ARD meeting and occurs during transition planning.
