Petitions are student requests for exceptions to an academic policy. You should consult with an academic advisor regarding your circumstances to determine whether a petition is appropriate in your situation and, if so, discuss ways to advocate for yourself on the petition form. Approval is not guaranteed.
The type of request you make will determine which petition form you need to use.
STUDY LIST PETITIONS are requests for changes to your enrolled classes after the Registrar's Office deadlines. Pre-Public Health majors and Public Health minors should contact their College/School academic advisors for information about study list deadlines and petition processes.
TRANSFER COURSE CREDIT PETITIONS are requests for courses taken at another institution to apply toward UCLA degree requirements. These petitions can be submitted before you take a course ("advisory" petitions) or after you complete the course.
PROGRAM CHANGE PETITIONS are requests to modify your officially declared degree program by adding a minor.
The UNDERGRADUATE STUDENT PETITION is used for requests that do not have a dedicated petition form.
We recommend submitting your petition as soon as possible. Study list petitions are considered late if you submit them on or before Friday of Week 10 during Fall, Winter or Spring. Petitions submitted after Friday of Week 10 are considered retroactive. Different fees apply depending on whether your petition is approved late or retroactively.
If appropriate, you may upload documentation that supports your reason for making your request. We strongly recommend that students provide supporting documentation whenever possible.
Processing times vary by petition type. Most petitions require 10-15 business days (excluding weekends and University holidays) for review. You can check MyUCLA > Academics > Advising and Academic Services > Petitions for updates.
If our office needs more information to process your request, an academic advisor will contact you through the MyUCLA Message Center.
