Public Health majors and minors take courses in six different subject areas:
Biostatistics (BIOSTAT)
Community Health Sciences (COM HLT)
Environmental Health Sciences (ENV HLT)
Epidemiology (EPIDEM)
Health Policy and Management (HLT POL)
Public Health (PUB HLT)
You can search for a specific term's course offerings using the MyUCLA Class Planner feature or the publicly accessible Schedule of Classes.
Lower division undergraduate courses are numbered 1-99.
Upper division undergraduate courses are numered 100-199.
Graduate courses are numbered 200-299. Undergraduate students--including Public Health majors and minors--are not permitted to enroll in graduate courses.
Departments can restrict enrollment in classes by class standing (e.g. "Juniors and seniors only", "Undergraduate students only"), majors and minors (e.g. "Public Health majors"), or instructor consent (Permission to Enroll, or PTE), using enrollment rules. You can check whether a class has any enrollment rules by clicking on the yellow warning triangle:
FSPH will restrict enrollment in core major requirements--including the 120 courses, PUB HLT 185A, and 185B-- to majors only through priority, first pass, and second pass enrollment. Public Health majors can enroll in these courses during their priority, first pass, or second pass enrollment appointments. Non-Public Health majors are not permitted to enroll in these classes.
FSPH may restrict enrollment in select elective courses to majors only (or majors and minors) during priority and first pass enrollment; however, we do not guarantee Public Health majors and minors a seat in their preferred electives. Public Health majors should enroll in these courses during their priority or first pass enrollment appointments.
Students who wish to enroll in courses numbered 99, 195, 196, 198, or 199 will need to create a course contract via MyUCLA > Classes > Plan and Enroll > Contract Courses. Before you create your course contract, you should speak with your faculty mentor about the nature of the work you will undertake, and identify what work you will need to produce by the end of the term to earn your final grade. To create your course contract:
Select the course number that best fits the nature of the work you will undertake with your faculty mentor.
Student Research Program (SRP) - 99: entry-level research experiences (3-10 hours per week) under faculty mentor guidance
Community or Corporate Internship - 195: off-campus internship supervised by a faculty mentor
Research Apprenticeship - 196: preparation and training for assisting with a professor's research
Honors Research - 198: development and completion of thesis for departmental honors
Directed Research - 199: intensive work on student's original research project or paper
Answer a series of brief questions that will include a request for a short course proposal.
Print your completed contract to PDF.
Obtain your faculty mentor's signature.
Submit your signed contract to the FSPH Office of Undergraduate Student Services via MyUCLA Message Center on or before 5:00pm on Thursday of Week 2 so that we can process enrollment before the Friday of Week 2 Study List Deadline.
Check your study list to confirm that you are officially enrolled in the appropriate contract course.
