Shown below are the goals and associated outcomes that the BSI program endeavors to produce in our graduates.
Goal 1. Develop the ability to effectively communicate using ASL
Outcome: 1.1 Demonstrate the ability to communicate in American Sign Language with grammatical accuracy, connected discourse, and sociolinguistic and pragmatic appropriateness across a range of familiar and some unfamiliar topics
Goal 2. Develop the ability to interpret from ASL to English
Outcome: 2.1 Produce dynamically equivalent simultaneous English interpretations of ASL or contact signing source texts
Goal 3. Develop the ability to interpret from English to ASL
Outcome: 3.1 Produce dynamically equivalent simultaneous ASL interpretations of English source texts
Goal 4. Develop professional dispositions that align with the Registry of Interpreters for the Deaf Toward Competent Practice monograph’s Entry-to-Practice Competencies
Outcome: 4.1 Display professional dispositions expected of entry-level interpreters
Goal 5. Develop critical thinking and ethical reasoning required to function as professionals in the field of ASL-English Interpretation
Outcome: 5.1 Apply ethical reasoning to interpreting decisions in alignment with professional standards
