Phonemic Awareness Lesson

In this lesson, students will practice changing around sounds in words. It is important for students to know spoken words are made up of individual sounds and that we can put the sounds together and take them apart and even change an manipulate them to be able to read and spell more words.

Activity Goal: Students will use strategies to make sense of and solve story problems independently.

Materials: Paper, something to write with, math tools of students choosing (e.g., blocks, counters or virtual math tools, Number Chart)

Directions:

  1. Students will listen to the directions.

  2. Students will choose their own "just right" numbers to make the problem challenging for them.

  3. Students will use a strategy to solve the problem. This could include fingers, drawing a picture, or using a tool.

  4. Students will explain their thinking to a family member.

  5. Take a picture and email it to your teacher!
