St. Laurent School Cell Phone and Personal Electronic Device Policy Summary
At St. Laurent School, we aim to create a focused and safe learning environment for all students. In line with the Manitoba government’s new guidelines and Prairie Rose School Division's policies, we have implemented the following rules regarding the use of cell phones and personal electronic devices:
Kindergarten to Grade 8:
No Cell Phones During School Hours: Cell phones are not permitted during school hours, including breaks and lunch. Exceptions may be made for students with specific educational or medical needs, as outlined in their Student-Specific Plans.
Storage: Students must keep their devices off and stored securely during school hours.
Grades 9-12:
Classroom Restrictions: Cell phones cannot be used during class time. They may be used during breaks, lunch, or for educational purposes with teacher permission.
Responsible Use: Students must ensure devices are used responsibly and stored securely when not in use.
Staff and Volunteers:
Device Use: Staff and volunteers must use devices for divisional purposes only, ensuring their use does not interfere with learning or supervision. Usage is at the discretion of the principal.
General Guidelines:
No Recording Without Permission: Video, sound, or pictures may not be recorded without the express permission of supervising staff and those being recorded.
Respectful Use: Bullying or harassment using technology will result in disciplinary action, which could involve law enforcement.
Consequences for Misuse:
Possible Consequences Include:
Confiscation of devices, with return to parents/guardians.
Consultation with parents or guardians.
In-School Suspension or up to three days of Out-of-School Suspension.
Any illegal activity will be reported to law enforcement.
Liability:
St. Laurent School and Prairie Rose School Division are not responsible for the loss, damage, or theft of any electronic device brought to school.
Exceptions:
Students with documented medical or diverse learning needs may be granted exceptions as outlined in their Student-Specific Plans, with approval from school administration.
