Visual Arts credits will fulfill the elective requirement to graduate with a South Carolina diploma.
Visual Arts courses are at the discretion of the student. Visual Arts classes will count as elective credits toward high school graduation.
Students are encourage to complete one credit in Fine Arts if they intended to apply to a four-year college.

Can't draw? Take Art 1. Want to advance your art skills? Take Art 1, and you don't have to know how to draw! Art 1 is a beginner art class. If you can draw, you can advance your skills as well. Projects are based on learning the fundamentals of art education. Students will create art based on teacher created project lessons. You will learn how to create realism using value, drawing techniques, painting, sculpting clay, POP art, caricatures, hieroglyphics, Greek vases and more.

Art 2 focuses on developing drawing skills, realism, large clay structures, plaster sculpture, block printing, cardboard relief and scratch board. Art 2 requires students to think more independently and invest more in personalized artworks.

Prerequisite: Art 2
Art 3 students produce work based on their ideas from a list of subjects. In the latter half of the course, students choose their projects. Projects: Drawing, finger painting, palette knife painting, book sculptures, canvas paintings, miniature art, social and political pieces, clay, block printing, scratchboard, relief, en-caustic and wire sculpture.

Art 4 students create their own syllabus and personal goals based on their own experiences, knowledge and interests. A digital portfolio will be created for personal use or for college entry. Professional photos of artwork will be taken. One genre may be chosen or a variety of different mediums and styles, the choice is yours.

You will learn the basics of how a digital camera works, manipulate the shutter speed, ISO, aperture and light to create stunning photos. Includes, memes, photomontage, photography, GIMP app & typography. Second quarter you will create digital artwork, digital painting, GIF, stop motion using the iPad Pro and Procreate App.
Advanced Placement Studio Art: Drawing

Prerequisite: Art 2 and instructor permission
College level course & credit . Year long. Art 1 and 2 are prerequisites. In this course you’ll experiment with a variety of materials and processes as you develop your drawing skills. At the end of the course you’ll submit a portfolio that demonstrates the different drawing abilities taught in the course, which include mark-making, line, surface, space, light and shade, and composition.
Advanced Placement 2D Art

Prerequisite: Art 2 and instructor permission
In AP 2-D Art and Design you’ll develop skills using materials and processes such as graphic design, photography, collage, printmaking, fashion illustration, and others. As the course concludes you’ll submit a portfolio that demonstrates your ability to practice, experiment, and revise your own work while communicating your ideas about art and design.
Advanced Placement 3D Art
Grade level: 11 or 12
Credit: 2 elective credits
Prerequisite: Art 2 and instructor permission
In AP 3-D Art and Design you’ll learn how to create art in different disciplines such as sculpture, architectural rendering, metal work, ceramics, and others. At the end of the course you’ll submit a portfolio that demonstrates your knowledge of art skills using three-dimensional materials.
IB Visual Arts Art and Design SL/HL
Grade level: 12
Credit: 2 elective credits
Prerequisite: Art 2 and instructor permission
A yearlong class consisting of 3 components: Task 1 - Comparative Study (compare and contrast 2 artists), Task 2 - Progress Portfolio (maintain a sketchbook journal documenting your experiments, reflections, intentions and investigations as you develop your own body of artworks and Task 3- an Exhibition (display of your studio artworks). You do not need to be an IB diploma candidate to take this course.
ART 101 - Art History and Appreciation (HGTC-Dual Enrollment)

Prerequisite: 3.0 GPA
This is an introductory course to the history and appreciation of art, including the elements and principles of the visual arts. (This course is transferable to public senior institutions as part of the South Carolina Commission on Higher Education Statewide Articulation Agreement.)
Enrollment in this course requires acceptance to the PACE Program at HGTC. Fee may be required if student has not met the prerequisite.
