Career & Technology Education
Career and Technology Education Requirements
Students must complete one Career and Technology Education credit to graduate with a South Carolina Diploma.
Students may elect to take a World Language course in lieu of a Career and Technology Education course to fulfill their graduation requirement.
Career and Technology Education courses are selected at the discretion of the student. Career and Technology Education courses may meet the requirement for graduation from high school if the student has not completed a World Language course.
Career and Technology Education courses are grouped into clusters. Students who meet the requirements in a particular career cluster may be classified as Career Completers and will earn a certificate in their area of study.

Emphasizes the recognition and care of common injuries and illnesses sustained by a physically active population. Subject matter will include discussion of specific conditions and injuries that may be experienced by individuals participating in athletic activities. In addition, the concepts of therapeutic modalities and exercise in the care of injuries will be examined. A focus on deeper understanding of body systems and common pathologies will be included. Concepts related to the administrative aspects of the sports medicine program will also be covered. Students will apply legal and ethical principles through real-world scenarios in various sports medicine settings. Other career roles in sports medicine will be discussed as the Athletic Trainer takes the injured athlete through the pathway of recovery.

Principles of Biomedical Sciences is a foundation course for the Project Lead the Way (PLTW) Biomedical Sciences program for high school students. This course provides an introduction to the biomedical sciences through exciting hands-on projects and problems. Students investigate the human body systems and various health conditions including heart disease, diabetes, sickle-cell disease, hypercholesterolemia, and infectious diseases. They determine the factors that led to the death of a fictional person and investigate lifestyle choices and medical treatments that might have prolonged the person’s life. The activities and projects introduce students to human physiology, medicine, research processes and bioinformatics. Key biological concepts including homeostasis, metabolism, inheritance of traits, and defense against disease are embedded in the curriculum. Engineering principles including the design process, feedback loops, and the relationship of structure to function are also incorporated. This course will not count as the third unit in the three-unit completer pathway.

In Human Body Systems, students examine the interactions of body systems as they explore identity, communication, power, movement, protection, and homeostasis. Exploring science in action, students build organs and tissues on a skeletal manikin, work through interesting real world cases, and often play the role of biomedical professionals to solve medical mysteries.

Students will use problem-solving techniques to assist in developing an understanding of course concepts.
