Lilburn Middle School will become a Professional Learning Community committed to working collaboratively to engage students in learning in order to actualize student potential.
Lilburn Middle School is committed to engaging all students in learning the Academic Knowledge and Skills through research-based best practices with mastery being measured by local, state, national, and world-class standards and re-teaching/reassessing students as needed to actualize their potential.
We use research-based best practices to engage students in learning.
We build healthy relationships with our students, parents, and community members.
We provide appropriate interventions to support students in actualizing their potential.
We collaborate with our colleagues toward building a Professional Learning Community.
We will be consistent and pervasive with effective instruction, assessment, and monitoring (aligned with the AKS), by collaboratively planning lessons that implement the Gradual Release Instructional Framework, Formative Instructional Practices, Critical Thinking, and Literacy.
Adversity builds muscle. Adversity creates strength. Adversity, it turns out, is preparation for success.”
— Andy Andrews
Good morning!
I hope that everyone had a great MLK day weekend. Usually, my family and I spend time in service on this day in order to make a small contribution back for all of the opportunities that we are afforded each day. In this most unusual year, situations prevented us from actually getting out and serving, so we spent time reflecting on the current state of our nation and worked to come up with a focal point of these times. Out of this reflection and discussion of the events that have transpired over the past few months (and recently) surrounding the issue of human rights, we realized how unsettlingly "relevant" this conversation is. We talked about how, lately, two important words, unity and justice, come up in different ways every day. We made a commitment to challenge ourselves to think about how we are promoting unity and justice in our daily lives. We promised to think about what WE are doing to make a difference. That every person, despite his or her own personal situation, bears some responsibility for doing something to make things better in this world. To help make the point, I shared this quote with my family:
If you can't fly, then run
If you can't run, then walk
If you can't walk, then crawl
But whatever you do, you have to keep moving forward.
~Martin Luther King, Jr.
This reminds us that no matter how small an action, you can always do something to keep things moving forward. Just like what we do every day at LMS to meet the needs of our scholars...Whatever your contribution, your actions help to keep us moving forward.
Let's remain SAFE, SOLUTION-FOCUSED, and SANE.
***Remember, we have the POWER of ONE!
We are STRONGER TOGETHER!
Your Proud Principal,
Dr. Irish
COVID Update
Just a reminder, we are asking all LMS staff to make sure that you are following the COVID prevention guidelines that we have in place. If you do so, you can help us to keep our school healthy and safe and REDUCE the number of individuals who need to be quarantined. I want to keep our school as safe as possible and I need your help! Please help with this by 1) not gathering, unless necessary to do so (and you're able to socially distance), 2) remaining at home if you're sick or waiting for testing results, 3) communicating to us as soon as you are aware of any COVID related health concern, 4) wearing your mask properly throughout the day, 5) maintaining a safe distance from others as you go through the day. 6) Report any self or student COVID concerns to our school's HRT reps.
The QPTS helps to keep us grounded in our instructional practices. For more information, resources, articles, and tools, please click on the "Quality Plus Instructional Strategies link embedded within the "Teacher Resources Heading on the portal.

Please take a look at the teaching and learning cycle that is at the above link. This framework helps to describe specific student and teacher actions that will help to maximize student learning. Best practices for delivering instruction of the AKS through this framework in a digital setting is outlined for teachers to use in streamlining their digital instructional practices. Check it out!
LMS Teachers who "pivoted" yet again to digital instruction without a single complaint. You guys are troopers and I appreciate all that you do each and every day for our scholars!
Peak: Most of our scholars are in good standing with their attendance!
Valley: We do have 338 scholars who are at risk for attendance (not logging on, not coming to school, or inconsistent attendance recording in Synergy). Please mark scholars attendance accurately, contact parents when scholars are frequently absent, and communicate chronic truancy issues to the grade level counselor for follow up.
New Items are in Bold
NEW:
There are still 43 staff members from our school that have not completed the Cyber Security Awareness training that was required by the district and suppose to be completed at the beginning of the school year. I will send you an email to let you know if your name is on the list and the assistant principals will follow up with you. Please make sure you complete this training by Friday, January 22 before leaving for the day.
Breakfast and lunch will be available for all students during digital learning. School buses will distribute meals next week via bus distribution (between 10:45AM and noon each day) and curbside pickup at LMS is available during the same time frame from our car rider lane. Please be flexible with students who may have to go out to the bus to pick up their meals starting at 10:45AM each morning. All children under the age of 18, regardless of which school and school district they attend, may obtain FREE meals this school year. Adults will need to pay for the meals through our cafeteria.
Live Lessons/Schedule
Please tune in to the announcements and share your screen each day.
Follow our LMS digital schedule each day that we're in digital instruction. This will allow for students to obtain lunch during the districts prearranged lunch time (10:45AM-noon). We are all teaching live instruction each day. You will need to post the temporary schedule on your eCLASS page to ensure that the days are less confusing.
Please post your agenda (on eCLASS) and lesson materials (in learning platform) by 8:15AM each day.
Attendance: This week, the DL code will be applied to all students for attendance. The NPD code is available for teachers to use for students who are not present during synchronous instruction. Please make sure to keep accurate attendance records of students for documentation and communication purposes should an issue later arise.
Instructional support teachers should coordinate with classroom teachers to ensure students receive their specialized services (ESOL, 504, SPED).
Inform scholars that they may participate in tutoring virtually
Working in the Building
All LMS staff will work from the school building.
Normal work hours for all staff.
This week is a JEANS week - (Wear your school appropriate jeans for the rest of the week).
Lunch is on your own this week- Make sure that you are back online and ready to start instruction on time each day after lunch.
Staff members' school-aged children can come into building next week. Students will have to remain with their parents during the school day. Students can receive a lunch from the school. Let Ms. Moore (cafeteria manager) know if your child needs a meal.
Remember, our safety protocols are still in place this week
Wear your mask throughout the building
Wash/sanitize your hand periodically throughout the day
Social distance (at least 6 feet apart)
Self-assess your health before entering the building
The first 8 people who read this are "Jeansuary" winners! This is my appreciation to you for being responsible in reading the newsletter in entirety. Thank you for staying informed! Go and tell Ms. Ranne that you are a Jeansuary winner and you will win a Jeans pass for the rest of January. We will award the first 8!
PREVIOUS REMINDERS:
Make sure to follow the grade verification process by no later than January 12th. As a reminder, the district will mail the report cards out by January 15th, so they need to be finalized by all LMS teachers by 1/12.
Please post your word (from the activity that was completed when we returned) to your door. If you cannot decide on a word, you may use the school's word, Intentional as a place holder until you determine the word that works best for you. Please also help to encourage students to decide on a word that will serve as a focus for them this semester.
Classroom Walls and Wooden Doors
Artwork and teaching materials shall be permitted to be attached directly to the walls and shall not exceed 20 percent of the wall area.
Glue guns may be used to affix materials to the wall. NO PACKING TAPE. Please ask Mrs. Markitan about other types of adhesive that can be used.
ONLY Painters Tape can be used on classroom doors.
Duty Stations- It is an expectation that staff who are assigned to an AM or PM duty station arrive to that assignment on time each day. If something arises, reach out to your administrator and/or Brian Howe to ensure that there is adequate supervision at your spot.
eCLASS and Gradebook- Please make sure to follow the guidance that was provided by Diane Brown in your work session on January 6th. Make sure to indicate to your students that your old eCLASS page is no longer in use this semester.
The third round of briefs are underway. Please also be on the lookout for information about your mid-year conference from your evaluating administrator.
The return of students to the building means that we continue to offer/recommend tutoring. Tutoring begins at 8:10AM. The following days are still assigned for each content:
Tuesday: Connections
Wednesday: MA/SS
Thursday: LA/SC
Wearing Your PPE
As we are returning from Thanksgiving Break remember to wear your face covering throughout the school, social distancing as much as possible, and sanitize/wash your hands periodically throughout the day.
Remind students of their responsibility as well around the building especially when they are in the cafeteria.
If a student is out due to illness, you will need to follow up with them to find out why. If COVID related causes are suspected, make sure to alert Mr. Howe/Mrs. StJames to follow up with the student and their parent.
Remind 101- for LMS STAFF. Sign up with the information above to be included in important and timely staff updates.
I am sure that you have noticed that our GCPS maintenance department has been working hard to resurface some of our wooden classroom doors. We had to do this to refinish the wood veneer that has been stripped off due to items being taped to the classroom doors. Please make sure to not tape items to the classroom doors.
Timely and regular attendance is an expectation of performance for all LMS staff. It is so difficult right now for us to get substitute teachers and support to fill in when you are out, I am asking for everyone to do their best in being at work each day and to be on time.
