Quality Plus Instructional Strategies
To Do's
Important Dates
Lilburn Middle School will become a Professional Learning Community committed to working collaboratively to engage students in learning in order to actualize student potential.
Lilburn Middle School is committed to engaging all students in learning the Academic Knowledge and Skills through research-based best practices with mastery being measured by local, state, national, and world-class standards and re-teaching/reassessing students as needed to actualize their potential.
We use research-based best practices to engage students in learning.
We build healthy relationships with our students, parents, and community members.
We provide appropriate interventions to support students in actualizing their potential.
We collaborate with our colleagues toward building a Professional Learning Community.
We will be consistent and pervasive with effective instruction, assessment, and monitoring (aligned with the AKS), by collaboratively planning lessons that implement the Gradual Release Instructional Framework, Formative Instructional Practices, Critical Thinking, and Literacy.
Greetings Mustangs:
I hope that you have had a chance to do something just for you this weekend. It is important to find time to relax your mind from our work and focus on the other important parts of your life. With the historic year that we're having, it is important to have some balance!
As we look to opening our school doors to 7th grade students this week, I want each of you to know that you are valued. This is a difficult and uneasy time for everyone. Teaching during this Coronavirus pandemic is so far from typical. It’s literally like nothing we have ever done before. I know this isn’t what you signed up for, and yet you’re doing it anyway. We don't know what's to come, but as professionals I know we will do our best to support students both in-person and digitally. Your mind maybe swirling about how bringing students back in the building will affect us emotionally and physically during this pandemic, but hold on to your faith and beliefs to get you through these times of uncertainty. Let's welcome our students back with a smile and show them how happy we are to see them.
As we head into another week, be on the lookout for communication from the admin team regarding any updates/information relevant to the first day of in-person learning for 7th grade and continued in-person learning for 6th grade. We are working together to fine tune student programming to make sure that things work smoothly for the next group of students to enter the building.
Remember, through this challenging time that we are all facing, our mindset about this situation will be the key to how we get through this. Let's work together to remain SAFE, SOLUTION-FOCUSED, and SANE! Have a Mighty Mustang Week!!!

The QPTS helps to keep us grounded in our instructional practices. For more information, resources, articles, and tools, please click on the "Quality Plus Instructional Strategies link embedded within the "Teacher Resources Heading on the portal.
Most of our students have completed their pre-tests in all classes at this point. This gives us a great opportunity to dive into the QPTS Student Goal Setting. The great thing about the pre-tests is that it helps to provide a data point that students can use to set targeted goals for themselves in your course. Additionally, teachers can use their class averages to set learning targets and to develop other daily goals for student mastery. Here are some "Look-Fors" for Student Goal Setting:
continually guide students to set appropriate learning goals and support them in monitoring their progress.
communicate goals for each lesson using learning targets and provide opportunities during and after the learning for students to reflect on their progress toward mastery of the AKS.
identify and articulate learning targets for AKS and actively monitor and reflect on their own academic progress in learning the AKS.
evaluate work to identify misconceptions and errors to progress towards meeting learning goals.
Here is where you can find the pre-test scores for your classes:
1) Click on the Schoolnet application on your Portal Home Page
2) On your Schoolnet homepage, make sure that you locate the section that you want to analyze
3) When you scroll down, you can see the data in multiple ways. Make sure that you maintain confidentiality when sharing with students.
COVID 19 Safety Video
Every Wednesday each school will play a Covid safety video on the announcements to frequently remind students about Covid safety. Teachers will have access to this link on the district website and can play it as often as needed.
Employee Children
District employees who have been bringing children to school will be permitted to continue this until September 9th when the last grade levels are phased in. At that point, the student(s) will have to either attend in-person learning or the parent will have to secure an alternative location for their children's digital learning. Please see me if you have further questions about this topic.
Flexible Fridays?
Communicate to students that Fridays are a regular learning day.
Students should participate in some type of review mini-lessons that is either synchronous or asynchronous
Students can complete missing content and assignments from early in the week.
Students can participate in remedial small group instruction sessions with the teacher
Teachers have the option to give an assessment on a Friday.
Teachers can grade required accountability tasks for the week and input into Gradebook while students are completing independent practice assignments.
Teachers can communicate with students and/or parents about missing tasks and/or graded assignments (by appt).
Support teachers can provide intervention support to students
Plexi-glass Shields
The district is sending out plexiglass shields for the teachers to use in their classrooms. We have already received about 1/3 of our supply (6th and Connections). These shields are tall, they stand up on their own and they are portable. They will arrive in phases as the different grade levels return to school. We are expecting to receive additional shields for 7th and 8th soon.
Student Camera Use of Devices
There have been questions raised about students having their cameras on during sessions. I have received guidance that we can recommend and encourage students to have their cameras turned on during Zoom sessions, but we cannot required them to do so. If you are having trouble with students turning on their cameras, reach out to the parents to discuss the concern. Explain to the parents and students how having the camera turned on allows them to be actively engaged and participate with the class. Let them know that, at the middle school level, it provides an added layer of security to help with this. Bring in admin support to discuss this with the parents, if needed.
Posting e-Class Content
To ensure that communication with students and parents is occurring at high levels, make sure to post an announcement each day to provide instructions for the learning that day. If you will be out, make sure that you provide clear instructions for the students. If you know ahead of time that asynchronous learning will take place (such as when your grade level students are returning to the building), go ahead and let the digital students/parents know the day(s) and the plan. This will help the digital students to know the expectations and to plan ahead of time.
