Dr. Irish's Message for the Week
Quality Plus Instructional Strategies
To Do's
Important Dates
Lilburn Middle School will become a Professional Learning Community committed to working collaboratively to engage students in learning in order to actualize student potential.
Lilburn Middle School is committed to engaging all students in learning the Academic Knowledge and Skills through research-based best practices with mastery being measured by local, state, national, and world-class standards and re-teaching/reassessing students as needed to actualize their potential.
We use research-based best practices to engage students in learning.
We build healthy relationships with our students, parents, and community members.
We provide appropriate interventions to support students in actualizing their potential.
We collaborate with our colleagues toward building a Professional Learning Community.
We will be consistent and pervasive with effective instruction, assessment, and monitoring (aligned with the AKS), by collaboratively planning lessons that implement the Gradual Release Instructional Framework, Formative Instructional Practices, Critical Thinking, and Literacy.
I hope everyone has enjoyed your weekend and took a little time for self-care.
Whew! This past week was a long one. If you were like me, you probably spent a lot of time watching the news in anticipation of a decision about our next presidential leader. This election has put a spotlight on the need for us as a country to come together and be better for each other. We are the examples for our younger generation.
As we honor our nation's veterans, we think about those who have sacrificed so much for our country. We think about the service of those who truly know what it means to demonstrate the Power of One. We pay respect to all of our service men and women.
How fitting for this Friday to also be Kindness Day (Friday, November 13)? Let's think about the service of those in the armed forces...let's be inspired this week to show kindness to our colleagues and everyone around us. Showing kindness to others is a simple and easy way to brighten the day of those around you. As an added bonus YOU are likely to feel happier when the people around you are happy. We spend so much time at work, it is important to feel happy at work. This week, I encourage you to participate in Random Acts of Kindness! Be the person that spreads joy in our school.
Motivational Monday - Send an uplifting email or text message to a colleague
Task Tuesday - Take care of a work task for a colleague
Wacky Wednesday - Make a colleague laugh with a funny story or joke
Treat Thursday - Surprise a colleague with a snack/drink
Fill A Bucket Friday - Write a note of thanks to 3 different colleagues for something they have done for you. Tape the note to their door or desk area.
Let's remain SAFE, SOLUTION-FOCUSED, and SANE.
***Remember, we have the POWER of ONE!
We are STRONGER TOGETHER!
Your Proud Principal,
Dr. Irish
COVID Update
Just a reminder, we are asking all LMS staff to make sure that you are following the COVID prevention guidelines that we have in place. If you do so, you can help us to keep our school healthy and safe and REDUCE the number of individuals who need to be quarantined. I want to keep our school as safe as possible and I need your help! Please help with this by 1) not gathering, unless necessary to do so (and you're able to socially distance), 2) remaining at home if you're sick or waiting for testing results, 3) communicating to us as soon as you are aware of any COVID related health concern, 4) wearing your mask properly throughout the day, 5) maintaining a safe distance from others as you go through the day.
The QPTS helps to keep us grounded in our instructional practices. For more information, resources, articles, and tools, please click on the "Quality Plus Instructional Strategies link embedded within the "Teacher Resources Heading on the portal.
As we navigate this concurrent instructional environment, we must think about ways to appropriately engage our students who have special learning needs. Take a look at this article to learn more about how we can support our students with disabilities while they learn digitally.
Congratulations, Mrs. Markitan and our custodians. We're so proud that you earned a 98.93% on our school inspection. Thanks for keeping our school safe and clean!
Thank you Mrs. Cooks, Dr. Hill, Dr. Myers, Jennie Viers, Paula Brooks, Cathy Richards, Winolee Furtney, Candace McEwan, and Norma Arroyo for a great first Mustang Mastery Intervention Session.
Congratulations to you. If you read this far in to our newsletter, you can enter your name into a drawing to have Dr. Irish watch your class while you beat the buses one day- there will be two lucky winners!
New Items are in Bold
NEW:
Discipline- Have you heard of the latest social media challenge circulating on TikTok? The Benadryl Challenge encourages children and teenagers to take large doses of Benadryl, an antihistamine, to induce hallucinations. Up to the challenge, many are intentionally overdosing and posting their responses on TikTok in an effort to gain popularity online. However, the side effects can be fatal, and hospitals have seen a sudden increase in emergency room cases. One mother whose child ended up in the emergency room stated, “As a parent, you worry about drugs and you know the signs for drug use. I never thought about having to lock up my allergy medicine. I just want other parents to know about this because it’s dangerous and I had no idea. And I’m angry. These people [on TikTok] are essentially prescribing medication without a medical degree and our kids are trusting them.” Do your parents and teachers know the signs of what to look for at home, online during digital learning, and in the classroom? • Dry mouth • Flushed skin • Rapid heartbeat • Trouble breathing • Seizures • Hallucinations • Unresponsive, unable to wake up
Please see below for the % of students who are Digital Vs. F2F
Please See below for the % of students passing all courses, then all core courses. As you can see, we have an extremely low % of students who are passing all four courses and an even lower number passing all four core and connections. Most of you shared some really useful information about the "state of grades" in your class. Thank you to the many teachers who have already responded. If you have not yet responded to the survey (sent out last week), please do so some time today. I will share the feedback with everyone when I hear from the last few teachers. I will share the grading feedback later this week.
United Way is coming to a close- please, please, please give. No amount is too small. Remember, 50% of the donations comes back to our school! You can donate by going to the Portal and making your selection there.
PRIOR WEEK'S REMINDERS:
Check out this article that focuses on the best practices for getting students to have their cameras on during class

Safety Protocol for Conducting IDEA Evaluations
All special education staff who conduct IDEA evaluations are asked to complete PD&E Course #26079, “Safety Protocol for Conducting IDEA Evaluations.” This includes psychologists, SLPs, teachers conducting achievement evaluations, OT/PTs, etc., These safety protocols provide guidance to ensure the safety of all staff and students during evaluations.
ISS
Please be aware that ISS will be closed. MR. Gilmore will send out additional instructions regarding students who require isolation.
Technology
Please check for an email from Dr. Maresh regarding the technological resources that students are using and how we can best maintain them at our school.
Dress Code
Please remind student of our school dress code that is in place. If students are out of dress code, please remind them of the appropriate dress code and follow through the disciplinary process.
Now that students are back in the building, we return to our professional dress. All LMS staff should adhere to the school dress code policy that is outlined in the Staff Handbook. This includes making sure that clothing are the appropriate length, transparency, and fit and that professional attire is worn each day. Spirit wear may be worn with jeans on Fridays. This includes "LMS" or "Mustang" specific clothing, not just clothing that is within school colors.
Morning arrival
To ensure that we have adequate supervision, teachers should plan to be at their door greeting students. This can be done safely by reminding students to use the directional traffic flow and by keeping a safe distance as students arrive.
