“Coming together is a beginning. Keeping together is progress. Working together is success.” – Henry Ford
Greetings, Mustangs!
I hope that you had a wonderful weekend.
As we head into this new week, let's spend some time thinking about how we engage each other effectively as a strong learning team. The best way to start this conversation is to think about others who have studied teams. In the last decade, Google has spent millions of dollars on measuring nearly every aspect of its employees’ lives – from which traits the best managers share to how often particular people eat together. The tech giant was determined to find out how to compile ‘the perfect team’.
The company’s executives worked hard on finding the perfect mix of individuals necessary to form a stellar team. They believed that building good teams meant combining the best people. But it wasn’t that simple.
In 2012 Google ran a project known as Project Aristotle. It took several years and included interviews with hundreds of employees. They analyzed data about the people on more than 100 teams at the company.
“We looked at 180 teams from all over the company. We had lots of data, but there was nothing showing that a mix of specific personality types or skills or backgrounds made any difference. The ‘who’ part of the equation didn’t seem to matter.’’ – Abeer Dubey, a manager in Google’s People Analytics division
Google’s intense data collection led to the same conclusions that good managers have always known: In the best teams, members show sensitivity, and most importantly, listen to one another.
Matt Sakaguchi, a midlevel manager at Google, put Project Aristotle’s findings into practice. He took his team off-site to open up about his cancer diagnosis. Although initially silent, his colleagues then began sharing their own personal stories.
At the heart of Sakaguchi’s strategy, and Google’s findings is the concept of “psychological safety” – a shared belief that the team is safe for interpersonal risk-taking. Google now describes psychological safety as the most important factor in building a successful team.
At LMS, I have seen countless examples of people working to build psychological safety within their team. Those who help to build psychological safety regularly do the following eight things:
Show your team you're engaged. Be present and participate in discussions and meetings.
Let your team see you understand. Seek to understand the other point of view.
Avoid blaming to build trust. Focus on finding the solution.
Be self-aware—and demand the same from your team. .You bring YOU to the team. Determine what you are bringing into the interactions that you have with others.
Nip negativity in the bud. If you have a team member who is negative, let them know that it is contagious and can effect the morale and performance of team.
Include your team in decision making. When the opportunity arises, find ways for others to have a voice in the final outcome.
Be open to feedback. No team, or individual, can grow without it.
Champion your team. Be the champion that your students, teachers and colleagues deserve.
Google ended up highlighting what leaders in the business world have known for a while: the best teams are mindful that all members should contribute to the conversation equally, and respect one another. It has less to do with who is in a team, and more with how the members interact with one another. Thank you for being on the team and thank you for contributing to the conversation. It is what helps to make us great.
Let's remain SAFE, SOLUTION-FOCUSED, and SANE.
Remember, we have the POWER of ONE!
We are STRONGER TOGETHER!
Your Proud Principal,
Dr. Irish

This week’s Edition 3 – QPTS Highlight Series Gone Digital is a repeat from last week. There are many resources here and I want to give you additional time to examine this document. This doc models strategies to support teaching in-person and digital students (Concurrent Teaching). Take a look at how digital tools can support effective classroom structures, and the SEL Considerations that engage students in their classroom social awareness (click on the image to get the link to the document).
New Items are in Bold
Guidance on Instructional Learning Preference Changes: 1st Semester – 9 week Mark
1st nine weeks ends on October 7 - 2nd nine weeks begins on October 13
Prior to school starting, we asked families to make a commitment for the entire first semester.
This decision allowed us to better plan for staffing and scheduling for students.
Changing circumstances meant parents asked schools to make changes after making their initial commitment.
LMS has allowed changes well into the beginning of the school year.
On September 2, 2020, we began communicating to parents that changes for individual students may be considered after the first nine weeks, if needed to better serve the students.
Here are the things to consider when granting an instructional learning change for a student:
Grades
Attendance/Class Participation/Engagement
Teacher recommendation based on Grades/Class Participating/Engagement
Parent request based on experience, change in work structure
Changes after the start of the 2nd nine weeks (October 13) should only be considered on a case-by-case basis.
All parent requests must be forwarded to the grade level administrator who will work with Dr. Irish to make a final decision
2nd Semester – Begins January 6
The district will communicate to families the information regarding instructional learning preference selection for 2nd semester during the week of October 26th.
Parents will be given a deadline for making a decision for the entire 2nd semester.
While changes may be made during 2nd semester, there will not be a 9-week mark for making changes.
Any changes that are requested after the start of 2nd semester will need to be on a case-by-case basis.
Mustang Mastery Intervention Program:
As mentioned in the staff meeting, we have a number of students who are struggling to demonstrate completion of assignments and/or mastery of concepts. We recognize that there is a need for intervention at this time. A planning team is meeting to discuss and finalize a school-wide plan for academic intervention and grade recovery. The details about this plan will be shared with you soon.

School Nutrition Program
The federal waiver for school meals allows for free meals and curbside pickup. This will be offered 5 days not 4 as originally offered (put on GCPS website)
The F and R lunch forms should still be completed- the deadline for renewal was September 23. The families have lost their label if they didn't apply
The waiver ends at the end of the calendar year (Dec 2020)
We are serving about 80,000 meals a day in GCPS- we need 100,000 meals a day to break even as a district
Lost Keys
Losing your assigned keys brings a security risk to the school and an added expense. Please be aware that there is a $15 fee to replace each key that you lose. You will need to let Mrs. Markitan know if you need to discuss a lost key.
Brief Observations
All certified staff will receive two 10-minute Brief Observations during the 1st semester and two 10-minute Brief Observation during the 2nd semester. Administrators can rate and provide feedback on any of the 10 Performance Standards. Each Brief Observation will receive ratings and feedback on at least 1 to 4 of the Performance standards.
Dress Code
Please remind student of our school dress code that is in place. If students are out of dress code, please remind them of the appropriate dress code and follow through the disciplinary process.
Now that students are back in the building, we return to our professional dress. All LMS staff should adhere to the school dress code policy that is outlined in the Staff Handbook. This includes making sure that clothing are the appropriate length, transparency, and fit and that professional attire is worn each day. Spirit wear may be worn with jeans on Fridays. This includes "LMS" or "Mustang" specific clothing, not just clothing that is within school colors.
Morning arrival
To ensure that we have adequate supervision, teachers should plan to be at their door greeting students. This can be done safely by reminding students to use the directional traffic flow and by keeping a safe distance as students arrive.
HR Compliance
If you have not completed your HR Compliance videos, LMS Sign-Off, and Safety Awareness Training, please complete these required tasks ASAP.
