Welcome to the Hill!
Track & Field is a team sport, but it is also an individual sport.
There is no other sport where individual improvement is so celebrated!
PLEASE read our Track & Field Handbook before the season starts!! By participating you are agreeing to ALL of the requirements listed in there, so make sure you are comfortable with that information!
More info:
You need to have your sports physical uploaded into Rank One BEFORE the first preseason practice. Instructions on how to do that can be found HERE.
Come see Coach Hunting in B106 to be checked off between classes, starting 9/30
You need good shoes -- they do not need to be fancy, but they do need to be comfortable running shoes without too many miles on them. You should expect to need to replace your shoes at least once per season! There are several running stores in our area who can help you with the best fit -- we partner with Big Peach Running, and they will give you a discount if you tell them you are a CHHS runner.
You should have a watch -- it needs to be an actual watch. The races will NOT let you use a smart watch in races.
Before the season:
We expect nothing from you going in, except for appropriate shoes and a willing attitude. EVERYONE runs...we do not cut runners for anything short of a failure to follow instructions and be part of the team. We do recommend you diversify -- there is a lot of competition for the 100m and 200m races. If you want to run more, push yourself into the longer races, hurdles, and jumps!
It is very important that running BEFORE the season. If you have not been active, please make sure to come for pre-season conditioning. Even if you have been active, the time to start working out is now, not after full practices start.
Drink a LOT of water, now and during the season. If you are thirsty, it is already too late!
Do your best, and have faith in the process. Do not get frustrated with yourself -- it takes time to build up endurance! If you follow the plan we set forward, you will get there.
Be a good teammate, now and during the season. We are a TEAM, meaning that we build each other up. You are expected to cheer on every runner, from the fastest to the slowest. We have removed athletes for not being teammates -- while track & field can often be thought of as an individual sport, we can only get better as a team.
During the season:
We will have practice Monday through Thursday, 2:45-5:30 (or earlier.) Generally we do not practice on Friday unless there is a good reason, and we will give you a heads up if so.
Non-race days: we will start the group warmup at 2:45...you should have already run two laps by that time. Please do not show up at 2:45! Show up by 2:30 to check in and do your laps.
Tutoring is important -- if you need help from a teacher, just make sure to have that teacher send Coach Hunting a teams message that you were there.
Race days: Pay attention to messages on Parent Square (required) for information. We may have to change plans at the last minute but you are required to stay in contact. See the "meet schedule" tab and the weekly overview for more information.
Practice is required unless you arrange with us (NOT WITH A FRIEND) ahead of time to miss practice!! If you have an appointment, please talk with us ahead of time. If you need to work with a teacher, please have them send us a Teams message. If you miss practices, you will be given a warning; if this happens more than once you may be required to sit for the next race.
Be a good team member. Run the practice you were given to run, and help your teammates to do their best. We are ALL working toward our best selves -- a team of best selves makes a best team!!
Celebrate every victory -- whether it be a team victory or a P.R.
Let us know immediately if you are injured or hurting. If you let us know quickly, we may be able to get you past it quickly; if you wait to see if it will go away, the injury may last all season or beyond.
The better you eat, the faster you will run. See Nutrition for more information.
