Connecting Power BI to ArcGIS online

Whether you're starting with a new ArcGIS for Power BI visual on an empty canvas or opening a map-enabled report, you can sign in using any of the following account types:

  • Standard—Included with Power BI and connects to https://www.arcgis.com. There's no sign-in required; just drag location data onto the map visual to get started

  • ArcGIS Online—Access private and secure content from your ArcGIS Online organization.

  • ArcGIS Enterprise—Access private and secure content from your ArcGIS Enterprise organization.

You can use the Standard account included with Power BI without signing in, or sign in to your ArcGIS account. If you use the Standard account and you open a map-enabled report with secure or premium content that was created by a signed-in ArcGIS user, a blocking pane appears over the map and you must sign in to a valid ArcGIS account to view secure or premium content. Each map on a report has its own authentication. You must sign in to view and interact with the maps with premium or secure content, but you can sign in to different accounts with each map.

When you create an ArcGIS for Power BI visualization, the connection default is www.arcgis.com for Standard and first-time users. If you've previously signed in, the visual uses the last-used connection. After the map visual has been instantiated—that is, after you've added data to the map—the visual is bound to the specified connection. To connect to a different account, click Switch account on the sign-in confirmation pane or create another ArcGIS for Power BI visualization and sign in.

To sign in to ArcGIS for Power BI, follow these steps:

  • Add a new ArcGIS for Power BI visual to a report canvas or open a map-enabled report. The sign-in pane appears. To use the standard ArcGIS for Power BI visualization included with Power BI, there's no need to sign in; drag a location field into the Location field well to start creating a map.

  • Click the account type you want to use. Depending on the account type you chose, different sign-in options appear. Follow the instructions in the section below that relates to your account type. When you've completed the connection process, the sign-in pane updates to show your status.

You're ready to get started creating a map—drag location or coordinate data to the appropriate field wells to activate the map visual. When the visual is active, the map tools appear on the map.

  • Click Map tools Map tools to expand the tools. To view more information about the account you're signed in to, click the Profile button Profile. As a report author, when you first create a map with ArcGIS for Power BI, you must add location data to the map to activate the visual and see the map tools. Drag a location field from your data into the Location field well (or drag latitude and longitude coordinates into the appropriate Latitude and Longitude field wells). ArcGIS for Power BI performs geocoding most accurately when the address information is on a single line in your Power BI data; see Prepare your data for more information.

Use the Standard account

All Power BI users have direct access to ArcGIS for Power BI right out of the box. When you use ArcGIS for Power BI with a Standard account, you're allowing the map to connect to ArcGIS Online to provide geocoding services, curated basemaps, and United States demographics to enhance your map.

If you're opening a map-enabled report that does not contain any premium or secure content, there's no need to sign in to view and interact with the map. The blocking pane appears only if the map contains premium ArcGIS content. If you haven't previously signed in to ArcGIS for Power BI, you're automatically signed in using the Standard account that is included with Power BI. If you previously signed in using a different account type, you can change your connection.

To use the Standard ArcGIS for Power BI account, follow these steps:

  1. Place an ArcGIS for Power BI visualization on your report canvas

  2. From your Power BI data, drag a location field into the map visual's Location field well to create a map. Alternatively, drag x and y coordinates into the respective Coordinates field wells. For detailed instructions, see Add data to the map.

Sign in with an ArcGIS Online account

When you sign in to your ArcGIS Online organizational account, an authentication token is automatically sent to your browser to recognize you as an ArcGIS user, and your organization content immediately becomes available. If the token cannot be found—if you're using a different browser or computer for example—you must sign in to access premium features.

To sign in using your ArcGIS Online account, do the following:

  • In the ArcGIS for Power BI sign-in pane, click ArcGIS Online, and click Sign in.

The ArcGIS sign-in pane appears. If necessary, expand the ArcGIS login section.

  • Enter your user name exactly as it was spelled when you or your administrator created your account.

  • Enter your password exactly as it was spelled when you or your administrator created your password. The password is case sensitive. If you don't know your user name or password, contact your administrator.

  • Optionally, check Keep me signed in to stay signed in for two weeks unless you sign out.

  • Click Sign In.

  • You're signed in and ready to add data to the map, and the sign-in pane updates to show your status. If you're viewing a map-enabled report, the map renders correctly.

Sign in with an ArcGIS Enterprise account

When you sign in to your ArcGIS Enterprise organizational account, an authentication token is automatically sent to your browser to recognize you as an ArcGIS user, and your organization content immediately becomes available. If the token cannot be found—if you're using a different browser or computer for example—you must sign in to access premium features.

Follow these steps to sign in using your ArcGIS Enterprise credentials:

  • In the ArcGIS for Power BI sign-in pane, click ArcGIS Enterprise. The ArcGIS portal URL field becomes active.

  • Type the URL of your ArcGIS Enterprise portal. If you previously entered an ArcGIS Enterprise URL, the entry appears in a drop-down menu. Click the desired URL to add it to the text box, or type a new URL.

  • The ArcGIS sign-in pane appears.

  • If necessary, expand the Your ArcGIS organization's URL section.

  • The login button shows the name of the ArcGIS Enterprise organization that you specified in the previous steps.

  • To connect to a different ArcGIS Enterprise organization, click Enter another organization and type the URL. Optionally, check Remember this URL to stay signed in for two weeks unless you sign out.

  • Click the blue sign-in button.

  • You're signed in and ready to add data to the map, and the sign-in pane updates to show your signed-in status. If you're viewing a map-enabled report, the maps renders correctly.
