本ゼミでは、日本社会、また国際社会における言語の問題について扱います。言語問題は、多くの問題に関わっています。権力、権利、誰をコミュニティに入れるか(包摂)、外すか(排除)。また個人、コミュニティ、マジョリティ、マイノリティがある特定の言語に触れられるかどうかということにも関連があります。皆さんは、まず言語が、アイデンティティ、ナショナリズム、そしてグローバル化にどのように関係しているかという問題を学び、さらに、言語の多様性を促進したり、制限したり、あるいは異なる言語の使用を管理抑制するような、様々な法と政策を学ぶことになります。他には、先進国、途上国にかかわらず、植民地時代から現在までの、グローバル言語、絶滅の危機に瀕した言語、先住民や新しく移住してきた人びとの言語にかかわる問題も重要なテーマです。個人の興味に合わせて、教育、雇用、職場等における、少数言語話者の包摂と排除という問題についても扱うことができます。
This seminar is for students who want to learn about language issues in society, both in Japan and in other countries. Language issues are often to do with power, rights, inclusion/exclusion, and access, for individuals, for communities, and for majority and minority groups. In this seminar you will learn about questions to do with language and identity, nationalism, and globalisation, as well as about different language laws and policies promoting or restricting language diversity and controlling the use of different languages. Other issues that we will focus on include: global languages, endangered languages, and language issues to do with indigenous and newcomer immigrant communities, from the colonial period through to the present, in both developed and developing countries. You can also learn, according to your interests, about the inclusion or exclusion of people through language in different areas of society, including education, employment, and the workplace.
The main aims of this seminar are to:
(1) create a positive and interactive learning community together
(2) build together our knowledge and understanding of language issues in society that interest you
(3) have many interesting and lively conversations and discussions about language issues in society
(4) enjoy doing research and fieldwork as we learn about how language issues affect you, other individuals, communities, and whole societies
(5) develop our critical understanding of the world and come to appreciate different connections between language issues, social justice, and human rights.
Independent study outside of class 授業時間外の学修の内容
予習・復習を十分にして授業に臨むこと。Weekly preparation outside the seminar (2-3 hours) is necessary. This may involve reading, watching video resources, searching for information, and making notes, as well as keeping an online reflection/research journal. In the seminar each week you will work in pairs and small groups and share your research and preparation actively through discussion, presentation, raising questions, and writing reflections. You can also carry out a summer project, and do fieldwork, particularly in the Autumn semester, if you wish to (for example, photo-documentation, interviews, life-stories, survey, and other ways of doing research about language diversity issues ).
