Art Class with Mr. Boren
By: Kimberly Cardenas Torres
The concept of art is to create an impact in people while delivering a message; it sets a creative mood and an elicit response. The goal for Mr. Boren’s class is for each of his students to master basic art principles and techniques while exposing them to a variety of artists and periods of art. There are different mediums of art. Some examples are watercolor, tempera and acrylic, color theory or mixing and artistic techniques. His classes are Art 1, Art 2, Intro to Painting/Drawing and Design.
Employee of The Month
PBIS Employee of the Month: Robert D. Walker
By Stella Bock and Autumn Meadows
Mr. Walker is an earth and environmental science teacher, as well as a coach for varsity basketball. He achieved Employee of the Month for October.
Mr. Walker has three adult sons, and he has been married for 28 years to his high school sweetheart. When you teach for over 20 years, you come across some old students. In this case, Mr. Hurt was a former student of his.
Mr. Walker taught in Indiana for 20 years. He was a park ranger for a little bit until he fell in love with the west. Mr. Walker moved from Indiana to Arizona in 2020. He states, “If I wasn’t teaching, I would probably still be a park ranger.” When he has free time, Mr. Walker likes to hike at national parks; his favorite being the Badlands.
Mr. Walker likes working at Poston Butte because of how similar it is to his other schools. He's like how neat it is and how diverse it is.
His favorite quote is ¨Learning to do, doing to learn, learning to live, living to serve.” and it is by the FFA.

“I just adore special learning moments,” states Mrs. Dorer, Certified Employee of the Month of October at Poston Butte High School. Mrs. Dorer, a paraprofessional in life skills, earned Employee of the Month. “It’s really just being a teacher's aide, but why be the teacher when you can just help out,” Mrs. Dorer humbly stated. She loves Poston Butte and loves the students even more.
Mrs. Dorer moved from Jackson, Wyoming to Arizona at 19 years old. “It was too cold for me,” she said. She is married to her husband and together they own a shipping company. She has some fur babies along with two adult children who she loves dearly and is so proud of their independence.
In her spare time, Mrs. Dorer reads Stephen King books, especially the Dark Tower books which are her favorite. Taking care of dogs is happiness she finds outside of her job. Hiking, camping, and taking her dogs to Schnepf Farms to meet their best friend, the donkey, are just a few out of school activities she enjoys; another one is learning. Learning is one of her specialties along with having an open mind. Knitting, painting, gardening, you name it she’s done it. But by far, her favorite parts of the day are those teachable moments. Mrs. Dorer loves to learn and help others learn as well, so when these special moments come around she takes them in, in all their glory. ”Those positive and impactful moments are everything.”
When asking Mrs. Dorer what working at Poston Butte is like she responded with one word; “home.” It is just her first year here, and she has already formed such a great and deep relationship with everyone, especially the students. She loves the diversity with both staff and students. “It’s the perfect amount of a safe and supportive environment with a little bit of crazy.” She said with a smile. One quote that really connected to her was a quote from Ralph Waldo Emerson - “What lies behind us and what lies before us are tiny matters compared to what lies within us.” Mrs. Dorer is a hard worker who loves everything she does and is excited to help others for the rest of her time here at Poston Butte High School.

SPIRIT WEEK RECAP
By Haley Walker
This year Student Council outdid themselves with Halloween spirit. Between the haunted hallways and the bonfire, how could anyone pick a favorite bit? Each day had a correlating theme to dress as; Monday being flannel day, Twitches Tuesday, Mortifying Mix Match Wednesday, Vacation in the Underworld Thursday, and Friday we dressed in our class colors. In between these events were a Powderpuff football game on Wednesday, a bonfire on Thursday, and a football game on Friday. The seniors took home the win in the Powderpuff game scoring, defeating the Juniors. Thursday’s bonfire lit the flame to the win of Friday night’s homecoming football game where the Broncos defeated Tempe High School and took home a score of 69-0. Friday, already so filled with events, also had a parade to show off homecoming royalty, our sports teams, student council, and more. All of this week led to Poston Butte’s Homecoming dance. The dance was from 8-11 and was held here at the school’s gymnasium. Our Broncos did absolutely amazing with this year’s homecoming/ spirit week, and we are all looking forward to the next one!

The Haunted Homecoming
Article by Aaliyah Orrick And Caleb Richardson
Saturday, October 23, 2021 was Poston Butte’s very own semi-formal Haunted Homecoming. At the homecoming dance, there was a photo booth, as well as an amazing DJ included. Homecoming night was full of great songs, like “Baby'' by Justin Bieber, “Low” by Flo Rida.
The dance itself was pretty awesome. The photo booth was packed with so many people, but it was worth the wait. But don’t worry, there was more than that. In the middle of the gym, there was a dance floor and there were misters that would spray you periodically. It felt amazing because it would spray you with the beat of the song. At the dance, there was a snack bar where you could get chips, drinks, popcorn, and more. But more importantly, the decorations were cool-looking and spooky.
We even had some students tell us how their time went at the dance. We asked April Morales, Abby D'Ambrosio, Johnny Williams, and Connor Lopez how their experience went, and this is how they responded.
“I would describe my time at homecoming as terrific and fun. The overall vibe of the dance was a different vibe, depending on the groups of people. I didn’t really pay much attention to the decor of the dance, but I would say it’s just about right. My three favorite songs of the dance were Baby, Suavemente, and of course, Party in the USA. Overall, yes! My time there at homecoming was really amazing, and I had so much fun.”
- April Morales
“My time at homecoming was really fun and the vibe was great as well, lots of smiling and laughing. I do think the decor of the place could use some more work, as well as the water should be free, and I wish the announcements were more clear on whether or not the dance required costumes or not. I don’t really remember all the songs that played, but I absolutely loved the songs that played, such great taste in music. Yes, lastly, I had an absolute blast.”
-Abby D’Ambrosio
“I had a lot of fun. I think the decorations were amazing and everything was just awesome. I loved it. I say it was more of a college vibe, y’know? It was classy, I definitely felt a college vibe. No, I think the decor of the dance was pretty good, I liked it. I don’t remember a lot of the songs, but my favorite was All I Do is Win by T-Pain. That was a good one. Yeah, overall my experience was amazing. I absolutely loved it.”
-Johnny Williams
“I enjoyed it, it was a really good experience. I enjoyed it really well. It was fun! It was a really good vibe! The decor was fine, I feel like they could do better next year, but yeah, it was pretty cool. My top three? I liked this one song, it was by Pop Smoke I believe. Ya, overall I had a lot of fun.”
-Connor Lopez
We think this homecoming was a blast and so much fun! We can’t wait to see what Poston Butte does for homecoming next year! We hope that everyone who attended the Haunted Homecoming had such an amazing time.
