Wrestling Interviews - Reflections on the Season
By Ethan Acosta and Kimberly Cardenas Torres
“Wrestling is a tough mental sport. It pushes you to become a better person as you get older, and it helps you develop into a man. I’ve been wrestling for 6 years, and I started out in 6th grade. The hardest opponent I have gone against was a guy named Cody from Combs High School. My season was pretty good. I tried my hardest to place out in all my tournaments; the lowest place I got was fifth place, and the highest that I got was 1st place. Third place state placer in the state wrestling.”
-Kris Carrillo, Senior
“I did the sport because my brother inspired me, and he was good at it. I gave it a try, and I liked it. The hardest opponent I've gone against was a kid named Zachary. I never gave up in my season. I always placed top 3, and I never gave up and completed my goals.”
-Chevy Landis-Ku, Sophomore
“I did the sport because I loved it and got back into wrestling. My season was pretty good. It was better than last year, and I improved a lot. I stick to my goals.”
-Armando Herring, Sophomore
Student of the Month: Ryan Hinds
By: Stella Bock and Autumn Meadows
One of this month’s Students of the Month is Ryan Hinds, a junior here at Poston Butte. Ryan is a kindhearted, honest person with a big smile. He brightened up the room as soon as he walked in for this interview.
Ryan is not a "school-body" like the previous Students of the Month. Ryan prefers to relax at home. On Ryan’s own time outside of school he rides his bike, plays the piano, and watches YouTube. He is also into video games, especially Call of Duty: Black Ops. Besides all the video game and piano playing, Ryan loves math. Math is Ryan’s favorite subject; it just comes easy to him.
Being the person Ryan is, he is always staying positive. He is humble and very proud to have been chosen as Student of the Month. When Ryan’s high school days are past him, he plans on going to trade school for painting. When we asked him what type of painting he’d like to do, he responded, “ I want to paint houses.” Ryan plans on being an interior designer. He wants to share his creativity and positivity with the world and why not do it while doing something you love? Ryan’s advice to his under and upperclassmen is to be positive and be proud of yourself, and we at the Bronco Corner Newspaper couldn’t agree more.
Student Of the Month: Alyssa Garner
By: Stella Bock and Autumn Meadows
One of the Students of the Month for April is Alyssa Garner, a senior at Poston Butte. Alyssa has been in FUSD since Kindergarten and has alway been a hard worker. Being NHS president, playing sports and having 5 siblings are some of the things that have made Alyssa the strong leader she is today.
Alyssa has been swim captain for two years now. First in her junior and now her senior year. She loves swimming and considers it to be her favorite sport out of all the others. Other activities Alyssa does outside of school is traveling. Alyssa travels out of the country many times throughout the year. The minimum she travels is 5 times a year. Her family's number one place is Mexico, and we’re sure she has fond memories of those trips. Piano, cooking, and baking are also some of her hobbies, though she says she has no life outside of school.
When the school year ends and her high school years are over, Alyssa plans on serving any way she can. After graduation, she will go on a mission for her church, and after that she plans on joining the Air Force. Alyssa states, “ I have always wanted to serve our country,” with a smile on her face. When we asked her why she chose the Air Force, she said that it was always her plan to serve, and the Air Force stuck out to her.
Every senior leaves behind a new hole Poston won't be able to fill, but Alyssa is also leaving some advice. Getting to school on time and doing what needs to get done in order to reach your goals while also having time for a life outside of school is the impactful message that Alyssa is leaving behind and taking with her onto her future. She will be missed, like all the other seniors, but we know that she’s got this in the bag.
Student of the Month: Brandon Sabbara
By: Stella Bock and Autumn Meadows
Another one of the Students of the Month for April is Brandon Sabbara, a senior at Poston Butte.
Brandon is originally from California, but has lived in Arizona for most of his life. He has one sister, and his favorite thing to do is sports, especially golf, which he has been playing for 5 years.
Outside of school and aside from studying, Brandon hangs out with his friends, plays video games, and of course, sleeps. Night driving and traveling are some things that Brandon enjoys on his own time.
Brandon is a hard-working student. After high school, he plans to get into ASU to major in BioMedical to become an ER Nurse or Doctor. Brandon has always wanted to help others and plans to do so in the future. He is very proud of his years in school and outside of school.
Being yourself and helping others is Brandon's advice to the students of Poston Butte.
“Everyone around you is an example of failure, few of them are capable of learning from it.” Never give up, and always stick to what you believe in. Brandon, like all the other seniors this year, will be dearly missed.
