Poston Butte’s Women's soccer team did a great job this year. All players gave it their all on the field, and it was inspiring to see how far they have come since the season began. With 5 wins and 11 losses they still kicked some butt on the field. Penda Sisay, a Senior and defender, along with Sophomore Midfielder and defender Brianna Felix have some input on their Varsity season.
Penda’s final season was bitter sweet. Her role was to pass on her knowledge and be a good role model for her younger teammates. As a player she values working together to improve and defeat teams, along with bonding together to form trust that every good soccer team has. Penda thought this season went very well. She really felt like she bonded with her team and not only did they play soccer, she stated, “We also built a very strong bond with each other, and it made the season even better than it could ever have been.” Even though they didn’t get the outcome they wanted at the end of the day, they fought their hardest and that's what matters. One of Penda’s proudest moments of her team was when they played Mesquite High school since they were a really good team. During the game our amazing womens varsity soccer team shut them down, and they didn’t score one goal. “In my opinion, our hardest opponent was the Prescott Badgers,” said Penda. It was Poston’s first home game, and it was a tough fight for both teams. What helped Penda and the rest of the team improve as a players were the summer training sessions run by Coach Malone and Coach Maloney. Besides team building, there is alway room for improvement. Penda states, “ Communication and being both a first and second-half team,” are just a few areas of improvement for next year. As a team, those are very important areas, and our Varsity team killed it either way.
Sophomore Brianna Felix, believes that teamwork and leadership is what it takes to win games. She stated, “This season had its fair share of ups and downs, and once we got a handle on it, it was too late in the game.” Brianna’s proudest moment was the game versus Vista Grande. Not only did they kill that game, but it was also where her teammate Ivana Huerta scored her first two goals. These two goals really brought the team together. Throughout the season Brianna said that what her teammates do best is get through hard/difficult times. “One of the hardest opponents would have to be Combs, and they were difficult because we weren’t expecting much out of them,” Brianna said. Even though they had their fair share of hard times during this season, the team improved as a whole. Brianna believes that leadership really helped her improve herself as a human being. Brianna believes that as a team they could improve by sticking together, shooting, finishing and bonding as a team.
Both Brianna and Penda are excited and have high expectations for next season. Brianna stated, “Next season we will have an entirely different team, a team that's undefeated, and one that will make it to the playoffs; a team that will win.”
Disney Club Fundraising and Event Plans
by Farrah Muhammad
The first thought that comes to mind when you hear the word “Disney” is the familiar animated films and classic storylines of princesses and villains. Poston Butte’s Disney Club offers students a welcoming community to learn about the animation, storytelling, illustration, and engineering that produces the magic of Disney.
The Disney Club is in its first year at Poston Butte. However, they already have big things planned. The club is currently fundraising for their spring break trip to Disneyland. Students can purchase chips, water bottles for 50 cents, and $5 sonic cards that include a variety of coupons and deals. Tessa Bram, the club’s president, explains that every purchase, “helps bring down the overall cost of the trip so kids who are going on the trip don’t have to pay even more.” If you’re interested in supporting the club’s fundraising efforts, you can contact Disney officers: Tessa Owens, Abbigail Speciale, Nathaniel Lambert, or any member of Disney Club.
On March 12, the Disney club members will bus to California and enjoy their annual trip to Disneyland. This trip is not simply enjoying the rides and fun at the park, the club members will attend a workshop at Disneyland. Tessa explains that “they’ll be teaching us the engineering behind the parklands and how they do the animations. It’s about three hours, and we get to learn all the bits and pieces behind Disneyland, specifically their leadership.”
The club is currently open and accepting new members. Tessa shared some of the activities at the club meetings, “We get to work together on posters. I really like hanging out with my other officers after school. We just hang out, paint, and talk. It’s a lot of fun.” The Disney club hopes to attract dedicated individuals who are interested in creating stories based on typical Disney tropes and symbols, as well as artists who practice animation. Their trip has been finalized for the year, so new members cannot attend. However, if the club retains enough members there will most likely be another Disney trip planned for the upcoming school year!
If you have any further questions or wish to purchase snacks, water, or Sonic cards from the Disney Club, feel free to contact the Disney Club officers mentioned above or one of the club’s sponsors: Ms. Means, Mrs. Tandecki, Mrs. Dowell, or Mrs. Smith.
