Title: The correlation between physical activity and sleeping quality of ASD children in normal situation and during COVID-19

Abstract

Background:The purpose of this study is to a) observe the amount of physical activity (PA) and sleeping quality (SQ) of Autism Spectrum Disorders (ASD) before and during COVID-19; b) the correlation between physical activity (PA) and sleeping quality (SQ) of Autism Spectrum Disorders (ASD). A total of 50 participants’ parents who will be randomly invited, including males and females. All participants (N=50) come from The Parents’ Association of Pre-School Handicapped Children and age between 8 to 12 with mild and moderate ASD children. Two online questionnaires will be used to collect data: The Physical Activity Questionnaire for Older Children (PAQ-C) and The Children’s Sleep Habits Questionnaire-Abbreviated (CSHQ-A).

Title: Effect of a 3-weeks online coordination intervention on improving co-ordination skills and reducing students' self-stimulatory behavior with Autism Spectrum Disorders (ASD)

Abstract

Objective: Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD) is a congenital neurodevelopmental disorder, individuals who diagnosed by this condition, behavior, social and communication are mainly difficult to Autism. Self-stimulatory behavior is common symptoms to ASD, such as repeating words and phrases, rotating objects and head banging which might influence ASD’ social interaction, daily life activities. Some research founds that Physical activities helps ASD reduce Self-stimulatory behavior, but no research co-ordination intervention could reduce ASD self-stimulatory behavior. On the other hand, poor co-ordination skill is one of developmental disabilities to ASD, through the co-ordination intervention to test the content of the intervention whether improve ASD co-ordination skills.

Method: The purpose of this study is to determine the effect of a 3-weeks online coordination intervention on improving the co-ordination ability and reducing the self-stimulatory behavior of male’s students who have the Autism Spectrum Disorders. 7 students whose ages range from 10 to 18 with ASD will be involved in the project. Result: After the end of 3-week online coordination and record self-stimulatory behavior before and after intervention, self- stimulatory behavior have decreased, children experienced significant improvement of their co-ordination skills(p<0.02).

Title: Changes of PA level and Impact of PA level related parenting on PA behavior among the children aged of 6-17 with ASD before and during COVID-19 pandemic in Hong Kong

Abstract

Background: Due to the COVID-19, most of the leisure and recreation facility were shut down. The impact of ASD child’s physical activities (PA) level was necessary to understand how the COVID-19 affected in Hong Kong. The parenting practices about PA level was an essential factor to influence directly ASD child’s PA. The objective of this study is to investigate the impact of PA level related parenting on PA behavior among the children aged of 6-17 with ASD in Hong Kong, and to examine the changes of PA level among the children aged of 6-17 with ASD before and during COVID-19 pandemic in Hong Kong. Method: Parent (n=39), whose ASD child was school age (6-17 years old), participated an online questionnaire that was included two questionnaires: The Physical Activity Parenting Practices for Preschoolers - Hong Kong (PAPPP-HK) and The Modified Physical Activity Questionnaire for Children (MPAQ-C). Result: There were significant difference in both questionnaires of the PAPPP-HK (t = -.3.682, df = 38, p < .05) and the MPAQ-C (t = 3.439, df = 38, p < .05). In the PAPPP-HK, the scale of parenting practices encouraging PA before the COVID-19 was significant positive relationships between PA levels and two subscales of encouraging parenting (r = .473, p> .01) (r = .667, p> .01), and negative significant correlations between Provision of appropriate places for child’s PA (encourage) to Promoting inactivity (discourage) (r = .335, p> .01) and Provision of appropriate places for child’s PA (encourage) to Promoting screen time (discourage) (r = .326, p> .01). During the COVID-19, Positive significant correlation and strong negative relationship were found which with low scores of encouraging parenting style associated with low scores of providing suitable place for child’s PA (r = .489, p> .01) and higher scores of Safety concerns / overprotection (r = -.348, p> .05). Conclusion: This COVID-19 has been given a huge impact for both ASD child’s PA level and parenting practice about ASD child’s PA. The encouraging parenting style associated with the PA level of the children with ASD.

Title: Effect of a 5-week online stretching program on the relationship between sleep quality and self-stimulatory behavior of students with Mild intellectual disability (MID) and Autism Spectrum Disorders (ASD)

Abstract

Sleep disturbances and Stimming behaviors are common issues in children with Mild intellectual disability (MID) and Autism Spectrum Disorders (ASD). Although many types of research assess the positive relationship between physical activity, sleep quality, and Stimming behaviors, there is no evidence to prove the online stretching and relaxing exercise also can foster their sleep quality and reduce their self-stimulatory behavior. Purposes: To assess the relationship between online stretching, self-stimulatory behavior, and sleep quality in MID and ASD children. Methodology: 7 males (aged 9-15) with MID and ASD were recorded on their sleep quality for 3 weeks by wearing Actigraph Accelerometer. Parents of the children also completed the Child’s Sleep Habits and Stimming Questionnaire for 3 weeks. Secondly, this research also wants to assess the effectiveness of online teaching in MID and ASD children. Results: Analysis showed that the online stretching program was significantly associated with both sleep quality and reduce their self-stimulatory behavior. Conclusion: Thus, the teacher can arrange proper teaching methods for students and we can guide parents on how to help their children to do home stretching exercises.
