Recording and the Music Industry
The music industry has changed so much throughout its 100+ year history in so many aspects. One of the factors of the music industry that has had the biggest impact is recording. Before the internet and DAWS (Digitial Audio Workstations), it was only possible to record and put out professional recordings of music if an artist was with a record label and had acess to millions of dollars in equipment. Since the internet and new technology this has all changed. Because of this, more people are able to put their work out into the world on their own, and even if they do not have large amounts of money or a label backing them. In 2024, so many people are able to share their own work and make waves in society and the music industry through digitial recording, streaming and downloading, and social media.
Digital Recording
This video shows Billie Eilish's brother/producer Finneas, showing the bedroom in their childhood home where they have recorded all of her music. Finneas talks about how he realized that he didn't need the expensive equipment in order to make great art because he had so many digital plug-ins on the DAW he was using.
Digital audio recording began with the creation of MP3s. The MP3 is a compression software that shrinks audio files to less than a tenth of their original size (Baran, 2017, pg. 172). Because the MP3 was so easy to use and transfer, it quickly became the biggest source of listening to music digitally. The MP3 made way for downloading, and eventually for streaming. Because MP3s are the biggest and easiest way for people to listen to music digitally, digital recording became a major way for anyone to record their art.
In the past, it was only possible to make professional music recordings if you had access to a studio and millions of dollars in fancy equipment. With the explosion of the internet and new technologies, it is possible for pretty much anyone with a few dollars to record their own music. There are digital programs that anyone can purchase and download in order to make professional recordings. Some of these include Logic Pro x, FL Studio, and Ableton Live. While some are available for purchase, there are some great free softwares available including Apple's GarageBand (Rogerson, 2023). It is extremely accessable to make these professional recordings at this time, that pretty much anyone can do it.
Some of the most famous artists in the world record their music digitally. Some of these artists include Ed Sheeran, Billie Eilish, Finneas, Taylor Swift's engineer Nathan Chapman, and more (Miranda, 2021). This is further proof that artists now do not need millions of dollars and a record deal in order to create and get their art out in the world.
Streaming & Downloading
This video discusses just how much the internet has truly changed the music industry.
Streaming and downloading has changed the way the music industry works and the way artists get paid. Digital music really became big through Apple's Itunes and the introduction of the IPod in 2003 (Baran, 2017, pg. 173). But since the beginning of streaming, digital downloads of music have been steadily decreasing. Digital downloads decreased 12.5% for albums and 22.3% for singles between 2019 and 2020 ("Year End Report", 2021). CD's made way for digital downloads, and digital downloads made way for streaming.
An issue that the boom of streaming has created is giving artist a fair pay for their songs being streamed. On Spotify (the most popular streaming service), an artist makes $0.003 per stream (which is around $3000 per 1 million streams). This is compared to when cd's were the most popular medium, at which they sold for around $30, and each artist got around 10% of the sale (Brian, n.d.). So they would make around $3 per sale. This was an actual reasonable way for artists to make a living back then. Now since streaming and downloading are so accessable it is so much cheaper, so it really is not possible to make a living off of streams.
Streaming and downloading has also made it much easier to pirate music. Music piracy is "the illegal recording and sale of copyrighted material and high quality recordings" (Baran, 2017). Because these recordings are so easily accessable, it was so much easier for people to illegally sell other's art. Even though many new laws have been created trying to battle piracy, the music industry claims that they lose billions each year to it (Baran, 2017).
Marketing through Social Media
This TikTok video is an example of the extremely popular dance trend for Drake's song, "Tootsie Slide".
In the 2020's, it has been found that many artists become famous or have big songs because of social media. One of the biggest social media platforms that artists market their songs on is TikTok. One of the biggest example of the impact of social media marketing is the song Old Town Road by Lil Nas X. This was the most streamed song of 2020. The artist, Lil Nas X, leased a beat from an online sample market called BeatStars for $30, spent $20 to record in a studio, and then released the song to Tiktok where it blew up and obviously became the most popular song of 2020. Because the song blew up on Tiktok, it got Lil Nas X 2.4 billion audio and video streams, and a major label contract with Universal (Baran, 2017). This example really shows the impact that social media marketing can have on music and the industry in general. Some other examples TikTok helping the success of songs are songs with TikTok dances. What happens is, TikTok creators make up dances (or are asked to make up dances by the artist) and then other people with keep recreating the dance, giving the song streams, as well as encouraging TikTok users to listen to the song. A specific example of this is when the artist Drake asked a TikTok dancer to create a dance to his song "Tootsie Slide". Because people were recreating the dance and streaming the song, the song went number one on the Billboard singles chart (Baran, 2017).
My name is Emma Christopher. I am a Music Industry and Public Relations dual major and I plan on graduating in May of 2026. I enjoyed contributing information that I already knew on the topic from previous experiene in this field. As someone who records music myself, I found it very interesting how much the recording industry has changed, even just over the last fifty years. It is very useful to know the background information on the topic that I have a passion for.
