AP & Dual Enrollment Statistics

Prerequisite:  Advanced Algebra/Trigonometry and/or Instructor approval through the application process.

Does Oreo Double-Stuff cookies really have double the filling?  Have you ever wondered if this statement is true?   In AP Statistics, you will learn the methods to mathematically collect statistical data, display your data, analyze the data and then test a given claim.  AP Statistics is not like your average mathematics course, it is a combination of mathematical computation, mathematical analysis, and English writing.  A student once said "Mathematics and English came together and had a baby called Statistics". If you enjoy math and writing, then this course is for you.

This two-semester course is designed to be equivalent to a college level introductory statistics course for the well-prepared math student. It concentrates on the theoretical aspects of statistics. The topics of AP Statistics are divided into four major themes: exploratory analysis (20%-30% of the course), planning and conducting a study (10%-15% of the course), probability (20%-30% of the course), and statistical inference (30%-40% of the course). These percentages in parentheses for each content area indicate the coverage for that content area in the examination, which students take in early May. This course is for the serious student. The ability to analyze and communicate results of statistical tests is an important aspect of the course. Students can expect daily assignments, which will average 7 to 8 hours per week.

Students have an option of taking the AP Exam in May and/or getting Dual Enrollment credit for Math 155 Statistical Reasoning at Virginia Western Community College.  Students wanting AP credit are required to take the AP Statistics Exam.  Students wanting Dual Enrollment credit will take a final exam in the Spring.

If you are interested in taking this challenging advanced mathematics course, then print and complete the application below and email the application to Mr. Amos at david.amos@frco.k12.va.us

For the math teacher recommendation, just let Mr. Amos know who your last math teacher was and what course. You do not need to send the recommendation to that teacher.
