AP Biology

Prerequisite: Biology 1, Chemistry, Algebra II (concurrent)

Advanced Placement Biology is a 2-credit course *  designed to be the equivalent of a college introductory Biology course taken by college science majors. It differs significantly from general high school Biology and Biology 2 with respect to the level of the text, range and depth of topics, the type of lab work, and the time and effort required of the students. This course aims to provide students with the conceptual framework, factual knowledge, and analytical skills necessary to deal critically with the rapidly changing field of Biology. The course culminates with the AP Biology Exam in May. The AP Biology Exam is three hours long and consists of a 90 minute multiple choice section and a 90 minute free-response section. The multiple choice section accounts for half of the student’s exam grade, and the free-response section accounts for the other half.

This course uses a college textbook and will require students to be motivated and committed to do reading and research outside of class (1 hour/night). Because of time constraints, material will be covered at a fast pace therefore, regular attendance is a high priority. Required laboratory experience (30-40 hours per semester) must be included in all AP Biology courses. The College Board, as a basic introduction or springboard for further experimentation, research, or independent projects has developed twelve (12) labs. They will be utilized in some format as part of the curriculum.

*This course may be offered in conjunction with Pre-AP Chemistry as an alternating schedule (A/B)  year long class for interested students. Students may also request dual enrollment credits with this course.

*** With recent changes in the AP Biology curriculum that can result in college credit transfer of 4 credits (with a passing score of 4, usually), it is strongly suggested that you consider taking DE College Biology 101 and then, if interested, DE College Biology 102 for a total of 8 credits. If you have questions, please contact Mrs. A. McGeorge, Science Department Co-Chair, alicia.mcgeorge@frco.k12.va.us.
