Beginner Dance

8302: BEGINNER DANCE: 5 credits

Grades 9-12

This course will provide students with dance aptitude an opportunity to receive training in a variety of dance styles. Techniques in ballet, modern, and jazz dance will be covered. Other dance styles such as hip-hop and multicultural forms may be included. Students will learn basic choreographic elements and have the opportunity to create their own dances. Basic dance history and dance critique skills will also be studied in this Beginner Dance course. All students will be required to perform in the spring dance concert as their final exam for the course.

Course Goals and Objectives:

  • Students will learn appropriate etiquette of a dance class.

  • Students will acquire knowledge and embody the Elements of Dance.

  • Students will gain exposure to various dance genres and techniques.

  • Students will understand basics of anatomy for dancers.

  • Students will be exposed to the choreographic and rehearsal process.

  • Students will learn about dance historians and their contributions to how dance is today.

  • Students will critique one another using basic feedback skills.

  • Students will self-evaluate their progress throughout the year.
