The first half of the summer term has flown by, and Year 5 have been exceptionally busy throughout.
A particular highlight has been their fantastic effort during the KS2 cross-country afternoon, where they showed great determination, resilience, and sportsmanship.
In English, we have explored a range of engaging genres, from expressive poetry to imaginative narratives inspired by Ancient Greece. In Science, we have begun a new unit on life cycles, building a strong understanding of how living things grow and change over time.
Over the past couple of weeks, the children have worked extremely hard during their assessments, and I am incredibly proud of the progress they have made. Thank you for your continued support at home—it makes a real difference.
Hopefully, as we move into the next half term, the temperature will begin to rise, and we’ll see more sunshine making an appearance.
I hope you all have a happy and restful half-term break.
In English, Year 5 have been exploring poetry and a range of different poetic styles. We focused particularly on rhyming couplets and rhythm, looking at how these features help to make poems fun and engaging to read.
The pupils then used what they had learnt to write their own poems about moving from Year 5 to Year 6. This gave them the chance to reflect on what they will miss about Year 5, as well as what they are looking forward to as they take this exciting step into their final year of primary school.
In Science, pupils have been learning about life cycles. We have explored amphibians, mammals and insects, and discussed how their life cycles differ and what makes each group unique. The children have shown great curiosity when comparing the stages of growth and development across different animals.
They then used their fantastic art skills to carefully draw and label the life cycle of a frog. This allowed them to apply their scientific understanding creatively, and they produced some detailed and thoughtful work that they should be very proud of.
Learning can be hard work, so it’s important to take a little break sometimes! Year 5 paused their learning to enjoy some yummy rocket ice lollies, which was a lovely treat and gave everyone a chance to relax and recharge before getting back to it.
In History, we’ve been learning about chronology—how events unfold and change over time. We’ve examined different time periods, such as decades, centuries, and millennia, and discussed how they help us organise events in history.
We also used this to think about how things develop over time, including looking at how social media has evolved. The children really enjoyed spotting the differences and making links between the past and present.
