There's been plenty of awe and wonder this half term!
What we've been learning in Summer 1
What a fabulous time we had in Doncaster at the South Yorkshire Air Museum! We started by seeing the oldest designs of gliders and planes before exploring aircraft designs through time, including bi-planes and Royal Air Force aircraft and drawing some of our favourites. Everyone enjoyed getting into some of the cockpits and using the controls! There was so much awe and wonder at the size of the jet powered planes and helicopters as well as the jet engines and missiles on display. We finished the day with a glider designing and flying competition before looking at the Air Force memorials.
We have been listening to world music this half term and picking out musical features such as tempo, instruments and timbre. After performing the song for you in our recent assmebly, we have since learnt longer rhythm patterns, performing these on drumsticks or untuned percussion and a glockenspiel backing tracking to accompany the singing. Mrs Dean has been very impressed with our rhythm and accuracy and has loved conducting the band!
We have been computer programmers this half term, practising our coding skills in Computing. We have practised creating events in our algorithms such as 'when clicked', 'when collide' and timer events. These have controlled characters' movements and direction, hiding or showing and when sounds are played. It hasn't been easy but confidence and skills have been growing.
Mrs Dean was thrilled to bits when we kepy bursting into rounds of applause as our characters did what we were trying to program them to do! The wonders of technology!
We have entered a the Young Writers national poetry writing competition this half term! The theme was monster and children had to create a monster character to write about. We thought about colour, appearance, actions and diet of our character then added the ideas into an acrostic poem, spelling out our chartacter's name. Mrs Dean was very impressed with how we changed word order and other creatives ways we got our ideas to 'fit'. We're excited to see if any of our poems are chosen to be printed in the poetry book or if we win a prize....
Well done poets!
We were very lucky to have a workshop when author Bethan Woolvin came to visit. Beth writes traditional tales but she twists the plot. After learnign about how she writes a story and show she does the illustrations, we made collages to go along side her book, Little Red. Bethan was really impressed by how Year 2 adopted the right style and how they placed the images considering colour and pattern - we were proud of them too! Well done illustrators!
Printing has been great fun in Art! We showed your our first print blocks made with plasticine in our Assembly but since then we have created nature themed print blocks like William Morris. We used these organic shapes to print in symmery and with rotations. After looking at the colours used in William Morris' prints, we used paints to make a coloured print and then contrasted with black so the shapes stood out, leaving the nagative space in colour. Everyone was so impressed by the effects!
Have a super spring bank holiday!
Please keep on practising telling the times to every five minutes around the clock face - it is such an important life skill and needs lots of practise! Remember there is also a Times Tables rockstars tournent to keep on working on too!
See you in June, the Year 2 Teaching Team
