Welcome to our Summer Term 1 newsletter! It has been another busy and exciting term in Year 1, filled with lots of engaging learning opportunities, creative activities, and memorable experiences. The children have continued to work incredibly hard and have shown great enthusiasm across all areas of the curriculum. We are very proud of all they have achieved this term and are delighted to share some of their learning with you.
This term, Year 1 had a wonderful visit from children’s author and illustrator Bethan Woollvin. The children were excited to hear about her stories and learn more about how books are created. During the visit, the pupils took part in a creative sketching workshop where they explored drawing techniques and developed their own illustrations inspired by her work. It was a fantastic opportunity to encourage creativity, imagination, and a love of reading and art across the year group.
Maths
In Maths this term, Year 1 have been developing their understanding of multiplication by learning to count in 2s, 5s and 10s and using this knowledge to solve practical problems. The children have also explored fractions, focusing on recognising and finding halves and quarters of shapes and quantities. They have enjoyed using practical resources and hands-on activities to build confidence and deepen their understanding of these important mathematical concepts.
Theme day- significant person
In History this term, Year 1 enjoyed taking part in a special theme day all about significant people from the past. The children learned about a range of inspirational historical figures and explored why they are remembered today. Through discussions, activities, dressing up, and creative tasks, the pupils developed their understanding of how people in history have helped to shape the world around us. It was a fun and engaging way to bring history to life for the children.
History
As part of our wider History learning, the children also explored the lives and achievements of inspiring astronauts such as Neil Armstrong and Mae Jemison. They learned about space exploration, the challenges astronauts face, and the important contributions these individuals made to science and discovery. We also celebrated the 100th birthday of David Attenborough by learning about his remarkable work helping people understand and protect the natural world. The children greatly enjoyed discovering how these significant figures have inspired others and made a lasting impact on our world.
Art
In Art this term, Year 1 explored the work of Kenojuak Ashevak, focusing particularly on her famous artwork The Enchanted Owl. The children studied the bold patterns, shapes, and colours used in her work and discussed how her art reflects nature and Inuit culture. Inspired by her unique style, the pupils created their own owl artwork using detailed sketching and colourful designs. The children showed great creativity and pride in their final pieces, producing some fantastic and eye-catching artwork.

As we come to the end of Summer Term 1, we would like to say how proud we are of all the children for their hard work, enthusiasm, and positive attitude towards learning. They have shown great progress across all areas of the curriculum and have approached every new challenge with confidence and curiosity. Thank you for your continued support throughout the term. We hope you all have a restful and enjoyable half-term break, and we look forward to welcoming the children back for another exciting and busy term ahead. The phonics screening check is on the first week back after the holidays.
