Another busy half term of work! Year 6 have worked incredibly hard this half term as we edge towards the half way point of the year. A new class for me and a new face for them: we have been getting to know each other and it's been a successful start!
As well as the usual curriculum subjects this half term, we have also covered Children's Mental Health Week and E-Safety Week, where the children have learned about strategies to deal with different things that could come up in life or on the internet.
Maths and English
In Maths, we have been exploring ratio and proportion, and algebra. The children have been working on mastering these skills and getting stuck into some good solid problems! We try to mix the learning up abit and get in practical elements where possible. Here are some photos of children measuring and creating scaled drawings when learning about ration and proportion.
For our English, we have produced lots of writing this half term! Lots of drafting and editing, before producing 'polished' pieces. The children should all be very proud of what they have written. We have focused heavily on starting sentences in different ways. Two novels have supported this writing: Skellig and Boy 87, the latter being the one that we will continue into next half term.
Year 6 have been exploring the vibrant work of Ukrainian artist Maria Prymachenko as part of our whole-school art festival. Inspired by her bold colours, patterns and symbolic animals, pupils worked across a range of media including oil pastels, acrylic paint and clay, creating striking artworks and vibrant decorative tiles. To enrich this learning, Year 6 were delighted to take part in a specialist artist workshop with Ukrainian artist Olha Zhydetska, where they learned the traditional Ukrainian folk art technique of one-stroke painting. This experience deepened pupils’ understanding of Ukrainian culture and allowed them to create expressive, meaningful artwork celebrating creativity and cultural heritage.
Science
In Science, we have continued to learn about the human body, including the different systems within it. We have compared, contrasted and then used our knowledge to decide which we think is the most important and why. We have created tables using given data and used secondary research to help support opinions and also find interesting facts.
History and Geography
Within our History topic, which is all about World War 2, we started learning about chronology generally and what it means. We looked in to when things were created/invented and focused on decades and centuries. The children have created their own timelines of these events in history and therefore were more prepared to start learning about a period in time within the 20th century: WW2. We are in the initial stages of this topic so have used Geography links too, to learn about the countries involved and have been identifying them on a map too. We will continue this topic into next half term.
