As the first half of the spring term comes to a close, we are excited to share some of the fantastic learning and special moments that Year 5 have enjoyed over the past weeks. From writing detailed biographies in English about the life of Frida Kahlo, to exploring some key elements of Shakespeare, Year 5 have shown great creativity, curiosity, and enthusiasm in their work.
The children have also had a lot of fun during Art Week, taking part in a variety of creative activities and producing some truly imaginative pieces. During Children’s Mental Health Week, they engaged in activities that encouraged reflection, mindfulness, and looking after their wellbeing. Space Day was another highlight — it was brilliant to see so many amazing costumes and watch the children dive into all things cosmic!
In English, Year 5 have been working hard on their biographies, learning how to research effectively, organise their ideas, and write about a person’s life, achievements, and challenges in an engaging way. Alongside this, they have been exploring elements of Shakespeare’s plays, discussing characters, dialogue, and the timeless themes that continue to inspire audiences today.
It has been wonderful to see the children approach every lesson and activity with such energy and positivity. Thank you, as always, for your continued support this term and we wish you and your families a joyful and well-deserved spring break!
Towards the end of last year, a number of our Year 5 pupils entered a writing competition titled “I Have a Dream” with the hope of having their work published. Pupils were invited to write either a short poem or a story, allowing their imagination to take them anywhere they wished. We are delighted to share that six of our pupils have been selected as winners and will soon see their work published in a book. We are incredibly proud of our authors in the making.
Congratulations to Ellie, Peyton, Aria, Charlotte, Ben and Jessica!
Art Week 2026 – what a fantastic, creativity-filled week we had! Each class was assigned a different area of the world and an artist to explore. Our focus was the wonderful Maria Prymachenko, a Ukrainian-born artist celebrated for her vibrant, imaginative and abstract artwork inspired by animals, wildlife and the natural world.
Pupils learned about expression and how art can represent feelings and emotions. They also learned facts about Ukraine to create informative pieces, as well as a piece representing our artist. Pupils then created their own artworks inspired by the style of Maria Prymachenko. They used mixed media such as paint, clay, tissue paper, pencil crayons, and wax crayons to produce their own stunning pieces.
Pupils took on a range of artistic challenges. They participated in a painting workshop led by a guest Ukrainian artist. Pupils focused on replicating a flower using continuous brush strokes, before using pipettes to add further detail.
In PE, pupils have been enjoying showing off their gymnastics skills and becoming more confident each week. They’ve been practising balances, rolls, cartwheels and round-offs, while improving their control and coordination. The children have also worked in small groups to put together short routines, developing teamwork and creativity as they performed their sequences for one another — we may even have a few future Olympians in the making!
Year 5 had an amazing time on Space Day. We saw some wild and wacky costumes, ranging from bright green aliens to multiple astronauts. We started the day with a game of Space Bingo, and the winners had to shout “BLAST OFF!” when they completed a line or a full house.
We continued the day with space-themed maths, followed by research about Earth. Pupils then created their own newspaper articles as if they were aliens discovering our planet for the first time. It was a great opportunity for pupils to use their imagination and creativity.
The final part of the day involved creating space-themed artwork. Pupils used oil pastels, chalk, and white paint to produce pictures of Earth as if they were standing on the Moon.
