It's been a half term of creativity and teamwork in Year 2, making learning fun.
What we've been learning in Spring 1
We have been enjoying learning about how animals and human grow and develop.
The children have sorted animals in different ways, according their their types, diets and what they need to survive!
They have learnt about the life cycle of animals such as frogs, butterflies and birds and explained these to others.
We know that humans are a type of animal and have explored the ages and stages of human life and what skills humans have at different ages.
Finally we learnt about staying healthy by exploring how our body reacts to exercise and testing how warm muscles stretch better than cold muscles.
Apologies for sending home glittery children last week, but the glitter definitely did help to model how easily germs can spread that might affect our health!
We have been working long and hard on understanding money recently; a maths topic but also a really important life skill. Our lessons have included the value of notes and coins, making amounts in different ways, counting up totals, making £1 and making change.
Have a look at the work we have been doing in our maths books on this topic.
When you're out and about it would be so beneficial if you are able to involve your children in looking at prices, paying with coins and notes, noticing change and understanding the value of money in the real world.
We were so proud of our art created in the style of Wycinanki from Poland, which means paper cutting. The children really understood the symmetrical nature of the art work and did a great job using folding and templates to cut out symmetrical shapes to build our collaborative floral display.
For a challenge, they cut out the tricky shape of a rooster and used templates and colours to add features, checking again to make both halves of the image symmetrical.
Even though cutting the shapes out was tricky, everyone agreed their cutting had improved and everyone loved the colourful style of the finished pieces.
This traditional artform was used to brighten up and decorate walls and homes and they will definitely do that on the corridors of Foxhill!
A couple of Polish dances that we learnt in PE during the Arts Festival!
It's been great to see the children getting absorbed in our recent dance topic in PE, enjoying being creative, expressive and inspired by each other.
The story of the dance has been as cold as our Queensbury weather: a penguin felt threatened by the polar bears in the North pole, so he sought the help of a snowman to hide then escape on a floating iceberg to the South pole, negotiating calm then choppy seas on the journey.
The children have learnt routines, devised their own actions using all body parts and worked in cannon, creating a leading-copying effect.
Enjoy the videos and see if you can spot elements of the story!
Thank you to all who have logged into Times Tables Rockstars and been practising at home and for supporting this important area of Maths. It has been great to see how much enjoyment and motivation the children are getting from it already!
Just a little more information about the TTRS program:
The GARAGE game is best as it clevelrly monitors your child's answers and will give them questions based on those they need to practise.
The heatmap at the end of the game shows you your child's recall speed of their tables and divison facts. The greener the better!
Tables have been set to match our curriculum: 10x, 2x, 5x, progressing to 3x challenge if children's answers show they are ready for a challenge!
If your child would like to practise a mixture of their 10x, 5x and 2x tables, the the JAMMING game allows you to select the tables you want to play with.
The children are enjoying the rewards of their hard work at the shop, some choosing to spend thier coins on accessorising their character and others saving up for the ultimate outfit!
An app is available from the usual app stores.
Looking forward to next half term, which will include our local history walk and Kenya theme day - details to follow.
Have a great half term!
