As we come to the end of the Spring 1 term, we would like to take a moment to reflect on what a busy and successful half term it has been in Year 1. The children have worked incredibly hard, shown great enthusiasm for their learning, and should be very proud of everything they have achieved. We are so pleased with the progress they have made and would like to thank parents and carers for their continued support.
The children have worked incredibly hard on their artwork this term, especially during Arts Week. We explored wycinanki, a traditional Polish style of folk art, and the children showed fantastic creativity, focus, and enthusiasm throughout the process. Alongside this, we learned some Polish greetings and even took part in a traditional Polish dance. It was a fun, engaging, and culturally rich experience that the children thoroughly enjoyed.
Maths
Having secured their understanding of numbers within 10, the children are now extending their mathematical learning by working with numbers up to 20. We began by focusing on place value and are now progressing onto addition and subtraction. The children are using concrete resources to support and deepen their understanding, allowing them to confidently explore new concepts. They have been working extremely hard and showing great determination and progress in their learning.
Writing
In English this term the children are coninuting working through Curious Quests with Professor Klunk, focusing on developing thier sentances with the word 'and' and using adjectives to make our sentances more exciting. They have been learning how to write clear sentences using capital letters, finger spaces, and full stops, as well as practising sounding out words to support spelling. The children have worked hard and shown great creativity and enthusiasm in their writing. One book we used was Jack and the Jelly bean stalk to make predictions about what could be at the top and wrote some fabulous pieces of writing.
History
In History this term, the children have been learning about significant people from the past. Our focus has been on Mary Anning, a pioneering fossil hunter. The children took part in thoughtful discussions about why her work was not recognised until later in her life and why her discoveries, which she called her “curiosities,” were so important to science. We even learnt a song which i hope you enjoyed at our assembly. This learning inspired the children during OPAL play, where they enthusiastically dug for their own fossils, making meaningful links between their historical learning and hands-on exploration.
In DT this term, the children have been exploring structures and learning how to make them sturdy, as well as what might cause them to become unstable or topple over. They investigated this by using a wide range of materials, including spaghetti, LEGO, and junk modelling resources. The children thoroughly enjoyed experimenting with different designs and were excited to use key vocabulary from the lessons to explain their ideas, giving clear reasons for why structures worked well or why they might fail.
Final Message
As we head into the break, we would like to thank all parents and carers for their continued support this half term. We hope you all have a restful and enjoyable holiday, and we look forward to welcoming the children back refreshed and ready for another exciting term of learning. Well done, Year 1, for a fantastic Spring 1!
Thankyou again,
Miss Handley and the Year 1 team.
