Another super half term in Year 2, ending with our fabulous Nativity! We hope you all enjoyed it - there's a few pictures on our Year 2 webpage. We've been out and about and hands on this half term ....read all about it below!
Learning in Autumn 2
We have been enjoying learning about different styles of Art - Kandinsky's abstract art, the French Impressionsist style using dabs and the Pointilism style using dots. We've been creating them in paint and digitally using ipads and stylus pens on the 2Paint program. Have a go at home!
This year's Science Week was themed on changes in the environment. We looked into different types of pollution, particularly water and air pollution and how it could affect food chains, starting with the plant that produces the energy. We investigated how polluted water and acid rain could affect the plants.
Our experiment involved dirty coloured water and lemon juice rain! We observed our plants over the week and topped up the pollution every couple of days.
We drew and wrote about what we had observed - the petals turned brown, curled and went crispy before falling off and dying. Not a healthy start to any animal's food chain!
It is always nice to get out and about in our local area, discovering things that we might not notice when on our usual journeys to School. At the start of the half term, we managed a dry (but foggy!) day to walk about the local area looking at the physical and human features of Queensbury. We also compared house styles and looked at landmarks. We drew and sorted the features we saw and then designed a postcard to advertise Queensbury with what we felt was its best natural and man-made feature! The children represented our School perfectly in the community!
To complement our History topic, The Great Fire of London, we visited one of Bradford's local museums, Bolling Hall. This building dates back to the 1600s and showed us what life was like for rich families of the time. We explored different rooms in the house, learning about how homes were heated and lit in the past, the style of cooking, what clothing looked like and even chamber pot bathrooms! The Hall was a long way away from the cramped, narrow streets of London with their flammable buildings! As we explored, we added in details to our Fire of London collage, such as artefacts from the time period seen in the house. Everyone had a good time and some even became the maid and Master of the house!
The cooking has continued with jam jar salad and healthy tortilla quiches this half term. Again we learnt about nutrition first, including how multicoloured salad ingredients include multi-vitamins, the meaning of free range eggs and that wholemeal flour tortillas contain more fibre.
Preparing the salad involved slicing and chopping lots of vegetables, using the claw grip and the bridge grip to hold them still, as well as using graters and peelers.
These skills came in handy when adding tomatoes and spring onion to our quiches, made from eggs, cheese and poured into a tortilla bread case.
We hope the children use these skills to help you out in the kitchen this holiday!
And finally, a Christmas story!
Did you know we have more authors in our Foxhill families?
We were very lucky to have a special Christmas story reading from Francesca Bradley last week, who together with her her husband, William, have written The Untold Tale of Crank Claus!
This laugh-out-loud Christmas book tells the story of Crank Claus, Santa’s mischievous big brother with a taste for pranks, chaos, and Christmas mayhem! With his two silly Nelfs (naughty elves!) by his side, Crank Claus sets out to take over Christmas… but soon learns that the holiday season is about more than just tricks and giggles.
And Year 2 definitely did laugh out loud! We knew we recognised one of those Nelfs from our class!

Have a very happy festive holiday and (hopefully) a relaxing break! We'll see you in 2026!
