Whether you are a first generation student, or a university legacy, it is likely that you are searching out scholarships to help pay for college tuition. After all, higher education can be expensive. 

• Check the black filing cabinet in Pupil Services for state and regional scholarship opportunities.  There are new scholarship opportunities in here every month.  These scholarships are published in the Pupil Services monthly newsletter, “Student Opportunities.” 

• Use fastweb.com or www.goingmerry.com to look for national scholarships.

• Research the college or university scholarship offerings for the schools to which you applied. A good starting point is to go to the financial aid webpages for the college/university.  

• Check to see if your parents’ employers offer any scholarships for employee dependents.  Also, if you have a job, check to see if your employer offers any scholarships.

• Contact professional organizations that support the occupation for which you will be preparing.  The Occupational Outlook Handbook is a good source of information regarding these professional groups 

• Organizations that you or your parents/guardians are members of often have scholarships.  Examples:  FFA, FBLA, NHS, 4-H, American Legion, your insurance company, your bank, etc.

When looking for scholarships make sure that the scholarship is legitimate! Remember that you don't have to pay for scholarships or other financial aid. Learn how to avoid scams by visiting studentaid.gov.
