Planning questioning pathways which require students to explain/ expand their thinking can lead to a deeper understanding of content knowledge.
Furthermore, asking follow up question rather than simply evaluating student responses may lead to an increase in contributions. Students may learn to value the thinking process rather than whether they are right/ wrong.
Pre-plan some questions that you would like students to answer in a class discussion.
Ask the questions and instead of evaluating, ask students additional questions to explore/ extend. their thinking.
