The Gradual Release of Responsibility model allows teachers to introduce new skills, concepts or tasks to students in a highly scaffolded, controlled way. To allow students the greatest chance of succeeding, teachers model a skill independently, then with input from the class, then allow students to try it in small groups before attempting on their own. This allows students to understand how the task should be completed, experience success and failure in a group environment and to understand exactly how the task should look when they attempt on thier own.
After presenting Learning Intentions to the class, explain the task and model to students, explaining your process and thinking aloud as you go.
Repeat the modelling process again, asking students to provide suggestions and inout to the task as you go.
Arrange class into small groups of mixed ability, then allow them to attempt the task on their own, while circulating and offering suggestions.
Give students the opportunity to practice the new skill independently, circulating and offering assistance where necessary.
NOTE: It can be valuable while modelling for students to see you overcoming challenges or facing difficulties. Modelling does not have to be a "perfect" demonstration of a given skill.
