• Images are very important as people were illiterate.

• Art is more symbolic and abstract moving away from naturalism as a way to emphaize the spiritual rathan than reality.

• Early Christian symbols such as the cross or fish express a distinct Christian identity, moving away from pagan traditions. It lays the foundation for medieval art, particularly in terms of style, iconography, and religious function.

• Art associated with pilgrimage such as reliquaries and votive offerings is interpreted as enhancing devotional practices.

Style Characteristics

• Figures are depicted with simplified forms, frontal poses, and less concern for accurate anatomical detail, focusing on conveying spiritual truths instead

• Iconic images such as Christ as the Good Shepherd or the enthroned Christ, make a move towards symbolic representations meant to convey divine nature

• Symbols play a large role as a means to convey Christian religious messages (cross, the fish, Chi-Rho)

• Christ is depicted as youthful and seen as a caring guide and protector. Later he is depicted as the Pantocrator (Ruler of All), a more authoritative frontal pose with a halo, holding a book

• Narrative scenes are typically arranged in a straightforward sequential manner

• Art was found in catacombs, with frescos depicting scenes of salvation, resurrection, and paradise
