WHAT DOES FLVS SAY ABOUT ACADEMIC INTEGRITY?
Let's Review!
General AI Policies
Check out the Quick Reference Guide to make sure you are following FLVS's Academic Integrity policies.
FLVS's Policy on Student Use of Generative AI such as CoPilot or ChatGPT
Make sure you understand how FLVS would like you to use Generative AI to help with your learning, but NOT as a replacement of your work.
Can I use AI (Artificial Intelligence) programs to help me write my assignments?
Short Response: PROCEED WITH CAUTION.
YOU SHOULD NOT COPY AND PASTE ANYTHING FROM GENERATIVE AI AND CLAIM IT AS YOUR OWN WRITING/ WORK. THIS WOULD BE UNETHICAL.
BUT, if you do use Generative AI to help you with your assignments, please reference the document above, FLVS's policy on student use, as you will need to cite your source and provide evidence, such as the prompts you wrote, to help you better understand the content.
You may also choose to research ideas and topics with AI programs to gain a clearer understanding of a topic. But, please do not rely soley on these programs for writing and research. Always paraphrase (summarize) what you are learning in your own words. We want to hear YOUR voice and are excited to see what you have learned. Also, make sure you are using legitimate research sources and that you are citing them in your writing and activities. Please include the full URL links of any sites visited at the end of each assignment.
General AI Do's & Don'ts
DO:
Paraphrase a generated answer from a question that you asked it to learn more about the topic or concept as a response to an assignment question. You are to view Gen AI responses as an additional source, much like you would a website article. You need to double check the facts but then paraphrase what you read, writing in your own words a response demonstrating your understanding of the topic or concept.
DON'T:
Copy and paste a generated answer from a question that you asked it to learn more about a topic or concept as it you had written if yourself. This is plagiarism and unethical.
How do I cite a Gen AI source?
In order for your instructor to assess how you have applied your learning from the course to your use of AI, IN ANY ACADEMIC SETTING, it will always be imperative to PROPERLY CITE AI IN YOUR SOURCES.
You may use either citation format you'd like when citing your sources for the assignments, although APA is preferred.
To properly cite AI:
Identify the key components of the citation:
- Author (the company that developed the AI tool (e.g. OpenAI))
-Date (the date that the content was generated)
-Title (the specific prompt used or a brief, descriptive summary of the topic/question)
-Publisher / Tool Name (the name of the AI tool (e.g. ChatGPT, Gemini))
-Location (a url to the specific chat)
APA STYLE:
Author. (date). Title. Publisher. url
Example: OpenAI. (2025, July 28). Inka culture and artworks (Generative AI chat). ChatGPT. https://chatgpt.com/share/69a77b0-800c-9acc
MLA STYLE:
"text of prompt" prompt. Name of AI tool, version, company, date generated, url.
Example: "Inka culture and artworks" prompt. ChatGPT, GPT-5 version, OpenAI, 28 July 2025, https://chatgpt.com/share/69a77b0-800c-9acc
Can I use quotations in my work?
Short Response: Yes, but you will need to do this in correct MLA format.
