BIG Ideas Students Develop About Math in Kindergarten
By the end of kindergarten, there are a handful of BIG ideas about math that students should understand:
- Count to 100
- Read, write, and represent (draw picture, build model, etc.) numbers to 20
- Count one to one and know that the last number counted is the number in that set/group of objects
- Compare two sets of numbers (2 numbers by the end of K) as greater/more than, fewer/less than, or equal to/same
- Understand that numbers 10-20 are made up of a "ten" and "someones.
- Classify objects into categories
- Describe and identify various attributes of objects: length, weight, color, shape, number of sides, angles, vertices, etc.
