BIG Ideas Students Develop about Math in Grade 2
In second grade, there are a few BIG ideas students learn and that are the foundation for future learning in mathematics:
- Understand that the digits in a three digit number show hundreds, tens, and ones
- Decompose or break apart three digit numbers
- Skip count by 5's, 10's, and 100's from any number to 1000 (by the end of the year)
- Read and write numbers to 1000
- Compare two numbers (to 500) using knowledge of place value with <, >, and =
- Be fluent with addition and subtraction facts to 20
- Tell time to the nearest 5 minutes on an analog clock and understand A.M. and P.M.
