BIG Ideas Students Develop about Math in Grade 4
In fourth grade, there are a few BIG ideas students learn and that are the foundation for future learning in mathematics:
- Read, write, and represent numbers to 1,000,000 using numbers, number names, and expanded form.
- Compare two multi-digit numbers using <, >, =
- Round any number to 1,000,000 to nearest place value.
- Fluently add and subtract multi-digit numbers to 1,000,000 using the standard algorithm
- Know factors of numbers to 100, as well as if a number is prime or composite
- Generate equivalent fractions
- Compare fractions with different numerators and denominators
- Add and subtraction fractions and mixed numbers with the same denominator
- Apply understanding of area and perimeter to real world problems
- Use strategies to multiply a four digit by a one digit number
- Use strategies to divide a four digit number by a one digit number (with remainders)
- Understand equal fractions and decimals with tenths and hundredths (/10, /100, .x, .xx)
