BIG Ideas Students Develop about Math in Grade 1
In first grade, there are a few BIG ideas students learn and that are the foundation for future learning in mathematics:
- Understand that numbers are made up of 10's and 1's
- Build understanding of place value of numbers to 100
- Counting on and back from any number to 120, and well as understanding a number 10 more or less than a given number
- Use objects, drawings, and equations to represent and solve real world addition and subtraction problems
- Develop a variety of addition and subtraction strategies for addition and subtraction problems with sums/differences to 20
- By the end of the year, add two digit numbers with sums to 100 using a variety of strategies
- Understand that circles and rectangles can be cut into halves and fourths (fourths, a fourth of, a quarter, etc.)
