BIG Ideas Students Develop about Math in Grade 1

In first grade, there are a few BIG ideas students learn and that are the foundation for future learning in mathematics:

Understand that numbers are made up of 10's and 1's

Build understanding of place value of numbers to 100

Counting on and back from any number to 120, and well as understanding a number 10 more or less than a given number
Use objects, drawings, and equations to represent and solve real world addition and subtraction problems
Develop a variety of addition and subtraction strategies for addition and subtraction problems with sums/differences to 20

- How? Understanding Subtraction
By the end of the year, add two digit numbers with sums to 100 using a variety of strategies
Understand that circles and rectangles can be cut into halves and fourths (fourths, a fourth of, a quarter, etc.)
