Primary Number Sense

First and second grade students are adding on to the foundation of Number Sense they've built in prior grades. To have "Number Sense" in the primary grades, students should be able to:

  • Grade 1
    • Easily identify any number to 120
    • Know the number before or after any number to 120
    • Skip count by 2's, 5's, and 10's from any number to 120
    • Know what number is 10, 20, or 30 more or less
    • Count on or back from any number (kids will often struggle crossing a decade, ex. 77, 78, 79, ????)
    • Decompose/break apart any number 1-20 in multiple ways
    • Instantly know "how many more" to make 5, 10 or 20
    • Have 5'ness and 10'ness
    • Subitize (instantly recognize) number patterns (If they rolled dice, they could instantly recognize the number pattern)
