In third grade, there are a few BIG ideas students learn and that are the foundation for future learning in mathematics:
- Round numbers to nearest 10 or 100
- Use a variety of strategies to add and subtract problems within 1000
- Understand how to find area of a shape and connect to multiplication and addition
- Understand meaning of multiplication and division
- Use a variety of strategies to build fluency of basic multiplication and division facts
- Multiply one digit numbers by multiples of 10
- Basics of fractions, understanding that a whole can be broken into equal parts
- Build models of fractions with shapes or on a number line
- Understand simple equivalent fractions
- Compare fractions with the same denominators
