Intermediate Number Sense

Third, fourth, and fifth students are adding on to the foundation of Number Sense they've built in prior grades. To have "Number Sense" in the intermediate grades, students should be able to:

    • Easily identify any number to 9,999 (grade 3), any number in grades 4 and 5
    • Know the number before or after (9,999 grade 3 and any number grades 4 and 5)
    • Skip count by 2's, 5's, 10's, and 100's from any number to 9,999 (grade 3), any number in grades 4 and 5
    • Know what number is 10, 20, or 30 more or less/100, 200, 300/1000, 2000, 3000/10,000, etc.)
    • Count on or back from any number (9,999 grade 3 and any number grades 4 and 5)
    • Decompose/break apart any number to 100 (grade 3) or 1000 in grade 4 and 5)
    • Know/use benchmark and landmark numbers 1-1000 (grade 3), any number in grades 4 and 5)
    • Subitize or instantly be able to recognize larger sets of numbers (ex. see 6 rows of 4 dots as 24)
    • Skip count by any number 1-12
